I don't get how people with medicaid and food stamps can drive a nicer car then me, have an iphone and have hair and nails always done.
I totally agree! I was at the store the other day and the lady in front of me was paying with food stamps but her nails were definitely done professionally and her hair was highlighted. Meanwhile, I haven't had my nails done since 2010 and just got my hair done after 9 months of putting it off!!

How do you know that her BFF or next door neighbor didn't do her hail/nails for free? Or maybe they traded child care for nails or something? I'm not really trying to get into the welfare debate. I just think people are too quick to judge sometimes. One snipit of your perception of a person should not shape your view on an entire governmental system.

Also, not everyone has health insurance through working. We own our business and let me tell you, private health insurance for all of us costs more than our mortgage. If we could be on the medical card I would in a heartbeat, toting my iPhone in hand:)

This is just one example that I've seen.
Plus, I know people IRL who don't know the difference between luxury and necessity and think they are entitled to hand outs. I also think that there are plenty of hard working people or individuals who just can't work that should absolutely receive government assistance. I just think if you can afford manicures, cigarettes and bar hopping, you shouldn't be taking money from people who really need it. There is no way you can say people aren't abusing the welfare system
Also if she traded a manicure for child care, I would still judge. Skip the mani and take the money for food!

I'm in no way saying that people don't abuse the system. Also, I would definitely take the manicure for childcare if I needed to look presentable for a job interview...

Ding ding ding ding ding! So refreshing to see responses like this to welfare Queen posts on the bump.
Maybe if the government controlled the prices of items that drive food prices (crude oil and corn products to name two major ones) 1/6th of the US population wouldn't need food stamps. Food has gotten considerably more expensive just in the past few years.

How come when you share an UO you have to defend it? I think it would be great just to be able to share your UO and that be it. But that's just my UO.....
Then the UO would go nowhere. You really think people shouldn't have to defend opinions? I hope this isn't the case outside of TB.

You have to own it. You have to be ready for people to play devil's advocate or challenge you. Otherwise, why play?
Look, we are a diverse group of people. Diversity is good. Differing opinions are good. Debates are good, as long as they don't turn into arguments/name calling/etc. Unpopular opinions are just that, unpopular. So of course you state it expecting to have to defend it if necessary. Why else would you state your unpopular opinion in an UO Tuesday thread?
