Food Allergy

large intake of corn question

My son had some sort of reaction last night. He woke up crying and itching his body and when we looked at it he had raised bumps all over his back and shoulders. They looked like small pimples and some looked like water bubbles. I have never seen anything like this before on his body. My husband said he saw it once on his neck after i kissed him and i had some forbidden food (peanuts) a while ago.  (that was the last time i ate peanuts at work)

He hasn't been eating much lately. He's been avoiding food and sometimes goes an entire day with just eating sweet potato pancakes. We're trying everything!  he's hungry b/c he asks for specific things but when we give it to him he chews it and then spits it out or eats one bite and doesn't want anymore.

Last night we made rice, corn, steak for my DH and bean burger for me. Everything was safe for him and he ended up eating all the corn only, pretty much almost 3 corn on the cob since he took it from me and dh.  Could it be the extensive intake of corn? we've never seen him react to corn but when he does eat it, it's usually a little. he's never eaten so much of it at once.  I'm just wondering if you can have a reaction to eating something in big amounts.

His reaction could be non-food related but due to his history, it's the first thing we think of.  is this worth calling the allergist about?

Re: large intake of corn question

  • Wow, how stressful.

When are you due for your next allergy test? The rash you described is exactly what DD used to get from my breastmilk until I cut out dairy and eggs after her major allergic reaction and the allergy tests that we did. So, in my experience, it sounds more like trace exposure to an allergy than a reaction to a large quantity of a food. But, maybe it is a signal that your DS is picking up a corn allergy? I really hope not, poor little guy sounds like he's already struggling with quite a laundry list of allergies :-( The only other thing that jumps out at me is the rice. Maybe he's developing a sensitivity to one of those things. I think it would be worthwhile to get in with an allergist, just because you have to rely so heavily on those ingredients (because of his other allergies) that you would want to know ASAP if it's one of those.

Is DS vocal/eloquent enough to tell you if there is something particular that is bothering him? The spitting out food thing sounds like maybe he's got some underlying discomfort, possibly tummy troubles or a scratchy throat from a new allergen?

he's suppose to get tested January/February.

I'm terrified of him picking up a new allergen.  He was negative for tree nuts originally and in January was tested positive for almonds and walnuts. So now we're scared of him picking up new ones.  Corn would be a tough one to avoid. I feel like it's in everything!

He didn't even try the rice.  Im going to check the ingredients of all the food he spits out to see if it contains corn.

He is verbal and does tell us if he's itchy.  He will come up to me and tell me his throat is itchy or arm or tummy. It would totally suck if he's allergic to corn but i would rather know and avoid and start fresh.

Im going to call the allergist today.
