Short nap but still tired

So, DS is "learning" to sleep in his crib at naptime.  Previously, he would ONLY nap in the swing.  Now, he will fall asleep in his crib after I soothe him for a loooong time.  But, he always wakes after 30-45 minutes.  I try to go in and soothe him back to sleep but he won't have it... at least not while in his crib.  If I pick him up and rock him or put him in his swing, he will go back to sleep for another 45-60 minutes.  I can't put him back in his crib after he falls asleep again because he wakes right up.  WWYD?

Re: Short nap but still tired

  • I'd just keep at it.

Aria will fuss for a couple of minutes after I lay her in her crib for a nap. I used to think that meant she wasn't going back to sleep and I needed to do something to help her. Then, one day while trying to soothe her, I had to pee... bad. So, I left her in her crib, turned on her sound machine and put her lovie in with her. When I went back in her room, she was sound asleep.

It turns out, I was keeping her awake by trying to soothe her. On her own, she does just fine.

    Good luck!

Edit: The same applies when she wakes up mid-nap. I either leave her alone, or (if she's crying) go back in, calm her down until she's pretty much out, and put her back in her crib. She'll do the "fuss for a minute" thing again, then she's out.

Edit 2: When I say "fuss", I mean whine around. I go get her if she's actually crying. I'm not a fan of CIO.

Unfortunately, my babe does not fuss.  He screams.  Always.  It's like he's scared.  I don't get it... :(

  • We are going through the same thing, except we use the bouncer.  We are just keeping at it to try and get him more and more comfortable in the crib.  We want to get him doing some solid naps in there so he'll be more prepared for the transition to his crib come fall.  If he wakes up, I try and get him back to sleep, but if he stays awake, we just get him up and watch closely for his sleepy signals so he doesn't get too overtired for his next nap.  A flexible schedule has been key for us.

  • This is kind of random, but it may be something to think about. Does your DS have a mobile (sp?) in his crib? We have one at one end of DS's crib, and I think if he sleeps so his head is right under it, when he wakes up it scares him.  Indifferent  Maybe it's seeing the shadow? If he is asleep at that end of the crib, he wakes up screaming! If I put him to sleep where his head is at the other end, he'll wake up happy, and sometimes put himself back to sleep.

  • I would just keep trying.  Eventually he will take longer naps, it just takes time.  If putting him in his swing after is working keep doing it.  When I first started putting DD in her crib for naps they were always short, she just recently started stretching them out.

  • I would leave him for a bit just to see if he could go back to sleep on his own. But only if I knew he wasn't scared, not sick etc. And. I was sure he was in the right position that he sleeps in.
