Membrane Sweep Question

For those of you who have had histories done or plan to, what were your doctors requirements as far as did you have to be dialated or effaced to a certain amount first and how many weeks were you? I have my 38 week appt tmrw and I'll be 38 weeks 2 days then and just wondering what to expect. I've been 1 cm, 50 effaced and last week had a very soft cervix. Thanks ladies!

Re: Membrane Sweep Question

  • I was 1cm, 90 percent effaced before my doctor would stretch my cervix...he said it was more effective than membrane stripping in my case. It didn't do anything though. I lost some mucus, but I had already lost my MP, and I didn't go into labor. I have heard that it works for many ladies though, so GL!

  • I had it done.  Not sure about requirements.  I was 3cm, 50%.  Had it done on Friday AM and my water broke on Tuesday PM.  Not sure if the two were related since the "effects" of the strip were long gone by then.  I cramped horrendously for 2 days.

  • I wanted my doctor to do it last week, but I was only 1 cm dialated & 75% effaced.. he said that 1 cm was not enough dialation and that I needed to be further along in that aspect in order for him to get in there.

  • With my second pregnancy, I think I asked about it at my 39w appt., just out of curiosity (i had never heard of it with my first pg). I was only 1cm and he said he physically could not do it until I was 2cm. I was 2cm the following week, 40w3d, he swept me and I was in labor within an hour.

I had a different dr. for my last pg and I believe she stripped me for the first time when I was in my late 39th week (39w5d?6d?) and I was 3cm. I don't think she had wanted to do it any earlier. I had them stripped two more times (both of those at 4cm) before getting sent in for an induction.

I have a friend whose dr. just wouldn't do it in general, didn't believe in it. So definitely talk to your dr. and see what their opinions are of it. Every dr. has different standards.

  • My doctor didn't do it till I was 2 cm.  (Yesterday...finally!)  As pp mentioned above, he also said he couldn't physically do it at 1 cm.   I had cramping afterwards, but it's been well over 24 hours and nothing has happened.  He'll probably do it again at my appointment tomorrow.

Added: The first time he mentioned doing it was 39 1/2 weeks, but like I said he couldn't do it because I wasn't yet dilated enough.

  • Thanks guys! Guess I'll see my progress tomorrow at my appt and hopefully they will do it!
  • at 39 weeks I was 1.5 and 50%-they tried to sweep-said 1.5 wasn't alot of room to manipulate

at 40 weeks I was 3 cm and 50% -she swept, i had bleeding after and lost mucus plug that night and then NOTHING

now Im a week overdue and getting induced tomm.

It works for some and doens't for others

  • I was 3 cm dilated and 80% effaced at 38 weeks, but my doctor didn't even mention doing it until my due date last Monday. I was 4cm and 90% effaced when she swept my membranes. It hurt really bad while she was doing it, and I spotted for a couple of days after... and still no labor. So I don't really have faith in it.

  • I got it done at 2 cm and 50% effaced. It didn't work but I also ended up getting a c-section because of failure to progress so that could have something to do with it. I was 39 weeks 5 days when I got it done and got induced at 40 weeks 5 days.
