Diarrhea from Amoxicillin

So L is on the pink stuff 2 x a day and has diarrhea from it.  This is normal right? is there a certain amount that is abnormal/when should I be a crazy FTM and call the ped?

Re: Diarrhea from Amoxicillin

  • I'm actually allergic to it (have an intolerance really) and that is my reaction. Pen and Amox can cause GI issues in some patients. I would let L's pedi know JIC.

I just called. Thank you! He's going to call me back.. poor little guy is getting a hiney rash from it.

  • No problem!

The rash might be because it's coming out and it's irritants, which are causing the stool issues, could be also causing the rash.

I've had a lot of success with triple paste to help treat Ari's diaper rash from his milk intolerance.

  • Antibiotics kill good gut flora along with the bad bacteria, causing diarrhea. It's normal. I got it from the vancomycin I was on in the hospital, Claire got it on bactrum. Try probiotics and naked butt time.

This is correct, sometimes with older kids and adults, you can help the diarrhea by eating yogurt or taking probiotics.  The only time diarrhea from antibiotics is dangerous is when it's C Diff, and you would likely know because that diarrhea is horrible and you are very ill.

Yeah, I got C Diff. Terrible. Not a fun cherry on top of my postpartum complication sundae.

OMG, Ernie! I know you had a lot of complications, I didn't remember you mentioning this one. So not fun.

I got C diff after taking Bactrim one time and I hope that never happens again. It is horrible.I actually thought I had it PP because I had the runs for two weeks. I had anti-biotics during labor for fever/infection and I was GBS+, so it would have  made sense. But magically it disappeared. It scares me to take any antibiotics.

But OP, like they mentioned you would definitely know if he had it. If it continues past the antibiotics then they may take a stool sample to check.
