PSA: Bumbo Seat Recall

I'm a STM and I used a Bumbo with my first and was planning to use it again with this baby. Well, the Bumbo seats (2003-2012) have been recalled and the company wants you to contact them for a repair kit, which includes a safety buckle. Article is below.

  • It never worked for us and I ended up selling it, but I enjoyed the baby guy's post on it
  • So a *floor* seat is being recalled after people used them on other surfaces? Sounds more like a redesign due to overwhelming improper use and not really a recall.

This, it's not meant to be put up on a counter top or table.

Gah, apparently I don't read thoroughly...I thought babies were somehow falling out face forward while on the floor and getting hurt that way. So basically, since I know better than to put my child on a raised surface in the bumbo, I don't really need the strap.

Some babies fall out of them on the floor too. Not as much damage is done because they are so close to the floor. My daughter's thighs were too fat to let her fall out. The buckle isn't a bad idea for all users that are strong enough to lift their butt out of it.

  • The original recall was for adding a warning sticker that advised people not to use on high surfaces. But apparently there are reports of head injuries on floor surfaces as well. To me its pretty common sense that I wouldn't use this on tile or hard surfaces, especially with a child that fails around or I'm not in arms reach of.

Yeah.  I agree.  Even if it is on the floor, who just sets their baby on hard surfaces and walks away with no protection?  I have concrete floors on our main level, and bamboo upstairs.  My son never had any skull fractures, because I was watching him, and protecting his noggin.

Also, we had a bumbo, but I never really used it, DS didn't like it.  I don't really think they're the cat's pajamas.

this....totally user error..dont put on a raised surface and then walk away!! ::face palm:: I plan on getting a bumbo still

  • I didn't want one, but my mom insisted since she was tired of seeing pics of DD lying down. To be fair, DD didn't sit up on her own until she was 9 months old, so that is a pretty long time. She had good head control for quite a while before that, so we did put her in the Bumbo some.

However, after a while, she was able to throw her butt up in the air, arch her back, and just about launch herself out of the thing. I can see how it could lead to injuries if people are stupid and put it up on chairs or on hard surfaces. She only ever sat in it in her playpen or on the carpeted floor (and once or twice between DH and me on the couch). I ordered a strap. Might as well if they're giving them out for free.

  • I've worked on a couple baby product recalls as a customer service rep and honestly most of the time it really seems like the recall is due more to customer stupidity than the actual product failing. People really don't read directions sometimes.

I did order the part for our Bumbo anyway. Even though I only use it on a carpeted floor, DS used to try to shimmy out of it and would get stuck in all sorts of weird positions. Once he did actually end up face first on the floor.

  • Some people lack common sense. I have the bebe pod... The orginal before bumbos took over. We never put out son on a high surface because it obviously not safe. I won't be buying another one, we loved it and got our use out of it for sure. Ours was purchased in 06. The good thing about the bebe pod is the middle section where the legs go is wider, so I don't think they can fall forward... At least we never had that problem.

  • I understand that they should have had belts in them before now but i hate to see a company suffer because halfwit didn't read the instructions and left their child unattended on a table both things that parents are told not to do on the package. The style of bumbo has changed in over 8 years of use why now is it a problem???? besides people are having parent fails and blaming the company.
