June 2012 Moms

New Moms' Group

So today I went to a new mom's group that was set up by a local online parents' network.  There were about 5 moms there.  It was OK and not totally uncomfortable, but I just didn't really connect with anyone.

I know I need to make some new mom friends, but don't want to waste my time with these sort of fails.  If only some of you Bump gals lived near by :)

Has anyone here tried some random new moms' social events, like meet ups, classes, etc.?

Re: New Moms' Group

  • I live close to Knoxville, TN, and I literally stumbled into a moms group at the local CD store yesterday and met some cool moms. I also just did a google search and found a mom's group in the area that I joined but I haven't actually met yet.

  • I tried looking at meet up but there was only 1 moms group near by and it was mostly people with toddlers =[

Its hard trying to find new mom friends. For me since I'm a 23 y/o SAHM any moms I find are usually in their mid 30's. A 10 year gap isn't resulting in any new friends

I'm feeling pretty alone since we moved quite a distance from my old friends... And none of them are even married.

  • I joined the local La Leche group where I live and I ended up meeting a lot of people who introduced me to another group called "Natural Parenting for Non Hippies". Both groups have official meetings once a month plus they set up play dates. I love both groups a lot and am glad I found them...a lot of the mom's I can relate with because they also bf and cloth diaper.

I am 23 as well. The 2 mom friends I have are older which isn't a bad thing in itself but I don't have a whole lot in common with them besides baby so that's tough.
  • I met a ton of nice moms at a swimming class through the hospital. You could check your local gym/Y for baby and me swim or yoga. Our mall has a stroller fitness class that meets before the mall opens and music groups are a nice place to meet and play (some are exclusive for ages too). Check your park district and library for baby classes as well!

  • I'm looking for a mom's group where I live too.  I'm fairly new to the area, and now that I'm a SAHM, I'm wondering how to go about finding friends near me!

I think a baby and me swim class would be fun. What age is it okay for babies to go in the pool?

  • I just asked the doc about swimming, and she said 2 months is totally fine to go in a public pool.  As long as you are not exposing them to direct sun/sunscreen.

Thanks! We have public pools around here that are indoors so that would be perfect.

  • I went to a picnic/meet and greet for a mom's group through a friend's church.  You don't have to be a member of the church to join and there are tons of babies my sons age (yay!).  They meet every other Thursday so I am taking Thursday mornings off from work from here on out.

Try the library too.  Our library does story time every Tuesday.

  • My hospital has a new moms group for moms with babies under 6 months, and a graduate moms group for babies about 6 months - 1 year.  I just tried it for the first time a few weeks ago, and am really enjoying it.  They meet once a week, and while I won't be able to attend after I go back to work (or at least not often as they meet during the day), I've met some great ladies, and a couple of them live near me, so we're planning to get together soon outside the group.  I'm so excited as I don't have any mommy friends near me with little babies.

Have you tried looking up something like the stroller strides classes?  Or LaLecheLeague meetings?  Or maybe there's a cloth diapering store near you that has mommy meetups?  Or maybe a church that has a MOPS group?
