Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Suddenly Sleeping More

I have been preparing myself for the 4 month wakeful. Instead, my previously sleep-fighting baby is napping like crazy. We used to have screaming fits Everytime we tried to put him down for naps or bedtime.

In the last couple weeks he starting napping for about half an hour every two hours. It was great, our previously miserable baby was now happy.

This last few days, he's sometimes not even able to stay up for an hour. Today he had slept for almost ten hours overnight, then had a three hour nap. I realize this is silly, but should I be worried?  My doctor is on vacation, so I can't ask until he's back.

Re: Suddenly Sleeping More

  • My almost 4 month old is suddenly napping more as well. He used to take one 2 hour morning nap but the past couple days he has been taking 3 or 4 naps and not just catnaps. Maybe a growing spurt?

  • My son is almost 4 months and this sounds like him about 2 weeks ago. He's not a sleeper but he was napping like crazy during the day out of nowhere! I guess it was a growth spurt. Not to scare you, but now we are in the midst of the 4 month wakeful and he's not sleeping AT ALL, day or night. It's rough. It's like there was a calm before the storm! Hope this is not the case with your LO! Enjoy the sleep while you can, just incase!

  • When DD was 4 months old I was dreading the wakeful period but she was the same way as your son. She started napping more and started sleeping more throughout the night as well. I was also a little confused so I called our ped and she told me that some babies sleep more while others sleep less around this time and to just enjoy it!

  • Thanks everyone! My husband keeps laughing at me - I worry when he doesn't sleep enough, and now I worry he's sleeping too much! I'm glad to hear its normal. I was worried he was sick, although he's showing no other signs.

Im still ready and waiting for this wakeful period. Although I have to say I've got my fingers crossed that his earlier constant wakefulness has earned me a pass for the 4 month period! Haha, if only it worked that way.
