Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Food sizes for baby

Maybe a weird question, but DD is already 10 months, and I feel like she's not "exploring" solid foods as much as she should be.

She eats puffs and small pieces of bread really well.  But other than that, I think I'm just too stupid to figure out how to get the food to her so she can really eat it properly!  I think I've read too much on here and confused myself.

I gave her some small pieces of steamed (really mushy) carrots but she coughed and gagged and ended up spitting up all she ate along with some milk (the pieces that came up really weren't chewed well).  She's also done this with a couple other foods.  I've also read about some people giving their babies food in long thin strips so they can grab onto them...but it always happens that when I do that she tries to shove the whole thing in her mouth at once!

What do you guys do?  Pea sized bites?  Strips of food?  Something else?

Oh, and DD has no teeth yet if this means anything?

Re: Food sizes for baby

  • We give LO bite size pieces, he can chew up or be able to swallow whole without choking...he doesn't have teeth, so while he gums things to death he may not be chewing it all the way down.  We found with strips of food he doesn't ingest as much and gets bored easily.  Now that he has his pincer grip down it's a whole lot easier to just make it bite size.  We also let him spoon feed himself mashed foods like beans or banana and avocado.

  • Try whole, semi firmer carrots or broccoli or toast. I give everything to LO larger than her hand and she gnawed/chewed from the side of her mouth. When her first tooth came in, actually it was a double, she started swapping to learn how to bite her food.

LO puts plenty of food whole in her mouth, since it isn't small enough to go down her throat I don't worry. Gagging is normal, choking is not. At this age a good pat of the back usually does the trick for choking. I had company over who wanted to call 911 and I didn't even flinch.

You chew with your molars and bite with your front teeth. my LO was on table foods well before she had front teeth.
