Talk to me about my favorite 'weird' girls names

This is just for fun...I'll probably never have the guts to use any of these names. I just thought it'd be a good conversation starter..

Tell me your thoughts on my favorite 'weird' girls names; they aren't actually all weird, I just would probably never be brave enough to use them.

Imogen (for those who don't know, it's pronounced IHM-uh-jen)

Eulalie (French version of Eulalia; pronounced you-LAY-lee)

Beatrice

Harriet nn Hattie

Astrid

Ottilie

Verity

Azalea

Aurelie (French version of Aurelia; pronounced aur-RAY-lee)

Awwwww thanks!! I really, really, really wish I'd be brave enough to use Imogen someday, specifically. I'm too worried about people mispronouncing it.

  • Imogen (for those who don't know, it's pronounced IHM-uh-jen)  Love, I do love Imogene better though

Eulalie (French version of Eulalia; pronounced you-LAY-lee)  Also love, I knew a dear old lady named Eula but this name is defintely old lady chic.

Beatrice  It's ok, I wouldn't call it weird or even uncommon at all.

Harriet nn Hattie  I really like it but feel like it's becomming more popular

Astrid I just don't get the appeal

Ottilie  Ok, finally found a "weird" one on this list.  Stick out tongue

Verity  I want to like it, but it seems close to a virtue name

    Azalea  GP flower name

Aurelie (French version of Aurelia; pronounced aur-RAY-lee)  I much prefer Aurora

Poppy  As a nickname it's tolerable.  It's cute.  Something I'd like on a book character but I couldn't do it to a kid.  I guess I might like it on yours.

Imogen is the one I'd be most likely to use from the list!  It's an awesome, and more importantly, legit name. I wouldn't let the fear of mispronunciation stop you!

Imogen (for those who don't know, it's pronounced IHM-uh-jen)--this is my bff's favorite name...unfortunately, her husband already shot it down :(

Eulalie (French version of Eulalia; pronounced you-LAY-lee)--ok. I think I like Eulalia better

Beatrice--my mom's mn. She hates it, I love it!!

Harriet nn Hattie--no. I don't like the way this name looks or sounds.

Astrid--ok, but I could see teenage boys having fun with this name. (a**turd) I like the name, but could see this possibly happening.

    Ottilie--no

    Verity--no

    Azalea--no

Aurelie (French version of Aurelia; pronounced aur-RAY-lee)--I much prefer Aurelia. I tried it on my husband as a mn for this baby, but he shot me down. Bummer, because Aurelia is such a beautiful name.

Poppy--this is a fun name!! I'm not gutsy enough to use it, though, especially as a first name.

  • I'm actually scared to show this list to my DH because we would both go crazy over it. DD is Vera and if this baby is for sure a girl we're naming her Margot, so we like those kind of names.

Imogen- DH LOVES this name. He has offered it up every time we have discussed names but I never really love loved it.

Eulalie- Oh my. I adore this name. I know DH would too!

Beatrice- Always on my list and DH always vetoes it because our last name starts with a B. Also, DD's middle name is Rue and DH doesn't want any more Golden Girl names.

Harriet nn Hattie- This was my top name when I was younger. Love the nn Hattie.

Astrid- The Office ruined this name for me :( Astird.

Ottilie- Cute. Like but don't love it.

Verity- I really like this and I didn't expect to.

Azalea- My least favorite of the names you have listed. No reason.

Aurelie- This is going on my list.

Poppy- Love. The only thing that would keep me from using it is that it sounds to nicknamey for me. I'm annoying about names and it has stopped us from using really cute names because I feared they wouldn't age well.

Our future girl list includes Lodene and Tallulah. Lodene is DH's 90 year old great aunt and I've always adored her name.

  • Imogen (for those who don't know, it's pronounced IHM-uh-jen)- this is one of those names I like the way it looks, but not the way it sounds. It is lovely, but nms, KWIM?

Eulalie (French version of Eulalia; pronounced you-LAY-lee)-  kind of reminds me of a uekele, so not for me. And maybe too many vowels for my taste LOL

    Beatrice - Just nms

Harriet nn Hattie- LOVE Hattie, but not Harriet. I had a grandmother named Hedwig with the nn Hattie... Trying to get DH on board with that.

Astrid Ever since that epi of the office I can't get a.ss turd out of my head.

Ottilie I kind of like it, but have never heard it before!

    Verity NMS.

Azalea LOVE. I don't know why, it has a lot of spunk but is also pretty classic. I also love names with a "z" sound in them.

Aurelie (French version of Aurelia; pronounced aur-RAY-lee)- I would have a hard time pronouncing it properly.

Poppy - I like, but not for my kid.

As for not having the guts: I never thought I'd have the guts to name my daughter Esme, but I did! And its a decision I am soooo glad I made!

I don't think there would be that big of an issue with mispronouncing Imogen.  It's a classic name and the spelling you have is one of the traditional ones.

  • I like a lot of these names.  I don't think they're weird!  I feel like I read a lot of them on here.  Great list!

I did LOL a little at "this is how to pronounce Imogen".  :-)  I don't think that name is weird at all, I sort of figured everyone knew how to say it?  Maybe I'm wrong....

  • I like Imogen the most. I've never noticed a different pronouniciation. I also like Beatrice, and Harriet. The rest I don't care for. And I feel like Autelie/Aurelia will have pronouniciation problems. I cant ever pro ounce that right.

  • I love these "weird" names posts because I know I'll find names I actually like. It's so refreshing not to hear Alice, Elaina, Sophia, Ella, Lily, etc.

Anyway, my favorites are Poppy, Harriet, Astrid, Imogen and Ottilie.

The only one I don't really like much is a Beatrice, only because I hear it quite a bit these days.

  • Some of the odd ones I like are : Alida, Jean,Margaret (Maggie...), Star, Gertrude, Arabella, Magena, Bret,Magdelena - - So many people would look at me funny!

Imogen (for those who don't know, it's pronounced IHM-uh-jen) hard to say but pretty

Eulalie (French version of Eulalia; pronounced you-LAY-lee) sounds like eukalalie... but pretty - i'd be worried of her getting teased

    Beatrice - like

Harriet nn Hattie - - like - but I like Hettie better than Hattie

Astrid - reminds me of how to train our dragon! she was awesome!

    Ottilie - pretty

Verity - might be hard pronunciation wise...

Azalea - my favorite of all of them I think

Aurelie (French version of Aurelia; pronounced aur-RAY-lee) - like

Poppy - very cute for a little girl, but what about for an adult? but then again, there are kids a lot worse off ;)

  • I love how uncommon, but legit they all are. It's an interesting list!

Imogen - This is one that I feel like I should like more than I do. I love the way it looks, but I'm not a huge fan of it's sound.

Eulalie - I admit, my first thought is ukelele. I'm on the fence a bit about Eulalie.

Beatrice - Love Beatrice, but prefer Beatrix if only for the awesome Trixie nn.

Harriet nn Hattie - I love Hattie, and agree it feels strictly like a nn, but I wish it were for something other than Harriet.

Astrid - I like, but don't love, it.

Ottilie - This is probably the most unusual, and it's quite pretty. I prefer Odetta, though.

Verity - This one has grown on me. I do like some of the less common virtue names, this being one of them.

Azalea - My favorite from this list. Love Azalea!

Aurelie (French version of Aurelia; pronounced aur-RAY-lee) - It's pretty, but I still prefer the more common Amelie.

Poppy - Love Poppy, but only as a nn (preferably for Penelope).

Imogen (for those who don't know, it's pronounced IHM-uh-jen)- It's ok, I just have a bad association with the name. My high school cheerleading coach was Imogen and I couldn't stand her, haha.

Eulalie (French version of Eulalia; pronounced you-LAY-lee)- NMS, reminds me of an instrument

    Beatrice- Classic but NMS

Harriet nn Hattie- Another classic but NMS

    Astrid- I like it

Ottilie- I don't like this at all

Verity- It sounds like a medication or business name

    Azalea- It's ok

Aurelie (French version of Aurelia; pronounced aur-RAY-lee)- It's ok

    Poppy- Love

  • I love "weird" names. My thoughts:

Imogen: One of my favorite names. I'm a little more partial to Imogene (there's something kind of sweet and Southern about it), but I like this pronunciation, too.

Eulalie: I want to like this name, but all I hear is ukelele in my head.

Beatrice: I like this name, but I like the flashiness of Beatrix more.

Harriet: I loooove Hattie. I honestly like it on its own best, but Harriet is a nice full name for it.

Astrid: LOVE. I really want my husband to like this name, but he can't get past The Office joke.

Ottilie: I can never pronounce this right. But whenever I look it up, I like it less than I intuitively pronounce it. Which is a bummer.

Verity: LOVE. I love virtue names. This is one of my favorites.

Azalea: Eh, I'd like it on someone else's kid, but it doesn't really thrill me.

Aurelie: Much like Eulalie, all I see is areola. Damn.

    Poppy: LOVE.

  • I really like slight variations of three names on your list and am putting my favorite version next to them. They are not currently under consideration for various reasons (family members with same name already, matchy with DD's name, etc.)

    Ottilie- Otilia

    Aurelie - Aurelia

  • Love your list! Eulalie and Aurelie are amazing! I love them. I also like Imogen, Poppy, and Ottilie.
  • Imogen - my dad likes a musician Imogen Heap.  NMS.

Eulalie - I think that Eulalia was a battle cry in the Redwall series - can't think of it any other way

Beatrice -  Nope.  Just nope.  Old lady, probably involved with a murder mystery.  Best that can come out of it is the name Bea.

Harriet nn Hattie - Actually pretty OK.  Dunno why.

Astrid - I know a lady who uses this name...  I always think of vikings, and her (she's very viking-ish.)

    Ottilie - Come again?  Haughtily?

Verity - I like this one.  DH doesn't.

Azalea - Can only think of it in the manner of "pruning the azaleas".  Pretty flowers, but too stinky to name a daughter after.

Aurelie - you may say the middle syllable is ray.  I always read it as "orally" - au-rell-ee.  It's very pretty in writing, but I would NOT EVER saddle a child with it.  Aurelia is better.

Poppy - I love it.  It makes me think of little old ladies handing out paper poppies around Veteran's Day. Guilty Pleasure name of mine for sure.  But since we tend to be extremely loosely affiliated with people researching middle eastern narcotics trafficking, it would cause way too many giggles to consider.
