F/U to my baby hates to be worn

I think DS just hates how confined he feels in the Moby and that's why the RS is better.  He is very nosy and wants to look around and see everything.  He spends the entire time screaming and fighting me to get out, and then gets so hot he can't cool off and it's just a bad spiral.

I retried the Beco today.  One problem though, his legs don't spread wide enough for him to sit on the carrier.  I put my arm under his butt in it so that he was sitting on it instead of hanging through the carrier.

Is it okay to put a rolled up towel or something like that under his butt in the carrier?  He is way too long for the infant piece. I tried it like 3 weeks ago and couldn't buckle it up over his shoulders, it was too short.  Either I'm doing something wrong or it just doesn't fit him.

He seemed to enjoy it though as long as I propped his butt up so his legs weren't spread so wide.

I did try the Bjorn and some Chicco one at BRU and he hated it even more because it offered no support.  My boys have hypertonia and are very stiff so they need the support of a good ergonomic carrier, but they can't spread their hips and legs the way a typical baby can.

For others with babies with similar dispositions, did they ever learn to like the Moby or did you just never really use it?

  • Ergo baby carrier. It's pricey, but it will be worth it. See if you can find a used one on Craigslist or something. For future reference, Bjorn and Chicco are BAD and can cause hip dysplasia. You can find loads of information online as to why this happens (the lack of support through the leg-butt area) and which carriers provide enough support. Ergo is one of the top names and I have a friend who has taken her child in one up the sides of an old mine in CO for three hours! Sooo hope that says something about the comfort factor. You may want to try doing some baby massage for a few minutes before getting your little guy in the carrier, just to loosen his limbs a bit. Good luck on finding the carrier right for you!

the Beco is pretty much indentical. i was trying the bjorn to identify what he hates about being worn.

  • Infant adjustable kinder pack? The crotch width is adjustable but it offers fantastic support like an ergo, etc. The stitching and foam seem sturdier too

  • So there is 2 things you can do to make the becco work now. I do them for my ergo. Sometimes I froggy my son inside of the carrier. So he stands in it and then his butt sinks lower down. This position is great for when he is tired. He will fall right a sleep. The other option is to take a piece of ribbon or a scrunchy and put it over the back of the carrier, and scrunch it together so that his legs will be able to reach the sides. I actually learned that technique in a baby wearing group it's great!

  • It's been a while since I've seen the beco in person but...I think you could use the pp suggestion to tie a ribbon around the base to narrow it enough for his legs to get out.  He is sitting in the internal harness (not infant insert) still, correct?  Also ok us use a small blanket under his but for him to sit on if that gets him in a good position - I've had folks do that in other buckle carriers and it worked well.

Many babies do settle in more to a tummy to tummy position once they have the trunk strength to turn from side to side to see.  Many have an awkward wearing stage around the age of your little guy.  I would just keep trying every few days and see what happens.

I think I mentioned this in your other post but with a mei tai or a woven wrap you could also try a high back carry (the beco won't get him high enough to back carry yet).  Many babies will be happy with that over the tummy tummy as they can see more.  Hip carries will be another option once he starts to get trunk control.

i did take your consideration in the prior post, however, i don't think a back carry will work with my son.  He has hypertonia, meaning he's kind of like a 2x4 with a floppy head.  He can't really bend and mold to my body because he has a tendency to arch backwards.  I can't even where my 2 yr old on my back because he just pushes back.  He needs the front carry so that he can kind of curl around my chest a bit, it seems to fight the sensation from them to arch backwards.

Just like I can't froggy DS2's legs.  He LITERALLY does not bend well enough.  Their joints are kind of like those plastic dolls, where the legs rotate a bit but don't really bend.

it's like trying to wear one of these dolls
