Natural Birth

Anyone use oils for relaxation?

I have been reading the book for our lamaze class and it suggested using lavender oil for relaxation, and jasmine for focus/energy during labor.  Just curious to see if anyone has experience using these?

Re: Anyone use oils for relaxation?

  • No, but my BF's doula used a lot of peppermint oil on a warm washcloth to help with the nausea during her labor.  It really seemed to help my BF.

  • My doula offered me some aromatherapy.

I thought it was ridiculous. I was in transition. Some freaking orange oil was not helping.

    That's pretty funny.

I can see where smelling something nice is better than smelling something neutral or unpleasant.

  • I use it a lot.  However, I don't use either lavender or orange oil.  If you're using over the counter stuff, don't expect a lot.  If you're using higher quality stuff, working with an aromatherapist will help you sort out what works best for you.  Like many "herbal" type treatments, EOs can be powerful tools, and can backfire if the wrong thing is chosen.  For example, not everyone responds to lavender well and it's estrogenating.  FYI - There is no quality control agency on essential oils, so buying from a reputable company is more important than buying something called medicinal grade or aromatherapy grade, as there is no one controlling those grades.
  • Yes, lavender essential oil. It was on a warm cloth on my forehead.

  • I used lavender EO in a diffuser and enjoyed it.
  • My doula put lavender oil on a sock and put it at the head of my bed during l/d. I think it really helped keep me calm. (I was induced due to preclamsia.) Get a good, high quality one.
  • We used peppermint EO on cold washcloths to help with nausea and feeling too warm. MW said it was the best smelling birth she has attended. It seemed to work.
  • Thank you for your feedback!
