Adding "Omega 3" To Baby Bottle

My DD is on Similac Advance Formula which has both Omega 3 & 6 in it.  My pediatrician told me that the company doesn't put enough Omega 3 & 6 that is required for a growing baby because it's an expensive ingredient to add to formula.  Therefore I have purchased a liquid form of "fish oil" that contains both and have been adding it to her morning bottle only so she gets the necessary nutrients for her brain development.  It has a lemon taste to it so it's not bad but I figure why not add in what she needs. It's only beneficial for her health :)

 Anyone else doing something similar?

Re: Adding "Omega 3" To Baby Bottle

  • This might sound crazy and I don't expect anyone to agree with me but I just don't understand why everything needs to be supplemented these days. It seems that everyone (not just babies) have to have extra vitamins, extra pumped antioxidant juice, fiber powder, phytochemical whatever.....is any of it really necessary? I do agree that if you don't have a balanced diet or are pregnant/breastfeeding, yes vitamins are probably a good thing to supplement. But otherwise, if it aint broke, why fix it? Are there signs leading you to think your LO's brain isn't developing properly? I'm assuming you and your SO are bright people, did you need extra fish oils to develop your brain properly? I don't know the answers but maybe it's worth thinking about before spending the money on supplements.

Then again, maybe I'm wrong, who knows. Sorry for the rant, it's been on my mind lately I guess I had to get it out.

I think the trend started because we're much less likely to eat a whole, fresh, natural diet than our ancestors were. A large chunk of the American diet is processed junk (I know I'm really guilty of this) lacking the vitamins and antioxidants humans used to get from just eating food.

That being said, I probably wouldn't add fish oil to my DD's formula unless it was expressly recommended by the pedi, but I'm a little paranoid.

  • Why is your doctor suggesting this?  Or is s/he?

  • It's only 1/8th of a teaspoon of Omega 3 being added, I'm not dumping a bottle of fish oil in her formula.  Omega 3 & 6 is like food for the brain and assist's in proper eye development.  It only provides benefits for the baby and causes no harm to her whatsoever.  If it did I surely would not be giving it to her.  Besides, my DD is a small eater and consumes about 20 oz of formula per day.  I want to make sure she is getting all the nutrients she needs.  My pediatrician said it won't harm her in anyway and will only provide her health benefits.
