XP-BF'ing-WWYD?

I'm posting here to get some opinions. I haven't made up my mind yet. I'm just so confused.

Anyway, I had to start a new seizure medicine because my seizures have not been under control since I moved into the 3rd trimester. The ER doctor that put me on it (after a quick call w/my neurologist) told me I won't be able to BF on it since it passes through the breast milk. I was quite down because I wanted to BF. I then had an appt with my neurologist and asked him. He said that he sees no issue because he has not seen any conclusive studies that it causes harm to the baby. And since I'm on such a small dose, that the baby actually wouldn't receive that much.

I'm so torn. I don't want my baby to get my seizure medicine while I'm bf'ing, but also we know bf'ing is better than formula. I'm just so torn. My medicine is in the same family as Valium. 

WWYD? I see my family dr on Friday, and will ask her thoughts too. But I'm just wondering what others would do?

    My inclination would be to go based on your neurologist's advice since these medications are in his field. But I would look up the medication myself and look at the risks. I know that there's a website that lists a whole bunch of medications and their risk levels but I'm not remembering what it's called. Hopefully one of the other ladies here will.

    It's safefetus.com. It has no classification, and pretty much says what my neurologist said about no conclusive studies. They do know it passes through the breast milk. *sigh* It's so confusing!! I hate having to make this decision.

    Contact a lactation consultant. Getting one more perspective can't hurt. Write down the arguments of each medical professional and ask them about areas of contention.

    Another vote for Infant Risk. That's the best resource on the planet for drugs and breastfeeding.

    Assuming they say what your neurologist says, though, I would 100% breastfeed. I really believe in breastfeeding, and I don't think we're anywhere close to knowing all the good it does for a baby. If you're on a low dose remember that it goes through your digestive system and then into your blood stream at low levels that pass into milk, then through your baby's digestive system and even lower levels to his bloodstream. It's so diluted that if your neuro is comfortable with that, I would be too.

    I'd ask your pediatrician.

    When my reumatologist gave me meds, he said they'd all be fine while BF, then I checked with my pediatrician and he told me that they'd be okay, but lower doses than I'd been told. I followed his advice.

    Sometimes checking with a Pharmacist is also a good idea. They are the ones who really know the drugs! At most, your child might sleep a bit more? It certainly shouldn't be life-threatening to them if they get a little through your breastmilk. Maybe you can even see if there are any studies being conducted on the side effects? If your child doesn't experience anything drastic, you will be able to pass that information on to others and give other BFing mothers peace of mind!

    Most doctors are not very educated when it comes to Breastfeeding, so I would be looking up the medication myself and determining its safety.
