I love reading everyone's birth stories so I figured I would share a short version of how my birth went. My biggest fear when planning a natural birth was what would happen if I ended up having to be induced. Everyone has heard that pitocin contractions are horrendous and I was worried about not being able to stick to my plan. Well, let me just assure everyone that it is 100% possible to have a med free, induced birth!
On 7/27 we went to my 40 week appointment and I had progressed to 5 cm. I had slowly been dilating the entire month. My Dr. sent us upstairs to L&D to be induced because of some issues with ds's placenta. We went upstairs at 12:00 and they got me hooked up and started pitocin about 12:30. I really lucked out and got the best nurse for our situation. When I told her I wanted to go natural she was 100% supportive, never asked if I wanted pain meds, etc. I was having contraction every 3-8 minutes but they were so light that I couldn't really feel them so they kept increasing my pitocin. About 3 hours in she let me out of the bed and I went and set in the glider. If you have any access to a glider during labor I totally recommend using it. Between rocking and having DH push on the acupressure points in my shoulders, the pain really was completely manageable (about a 3 on a 1-10 scale). About 4:30-5:00 my nurse had me get back in the bed so she could check my progress. At this point I was between 8-9 cm and my water still hadn't broken. She tried to break to herself, this was probably the most painful part of the whole thing. When she couldn't break it she called downstairs to my Dr. and asked her to come up and take care of it. My Dr. came up probably 15 minutes later and broke my water. This was when I really had to start focusing because those contractions got serious real fast! One trick that worked for me, instead of squeezing on DH's hand during contractions, was to make a fist and push against his had while he pushed back. Who knows why it worked, but it did! I started pushing about 5:30 and the Dr. came in about 6:00. DS's head kept getting caught on my pubic bone, and his arm was up by his head, so she had to perform and episiotomy and use the vacuum to help guide him out. Turned out he also had his umbilical cord wrapped around his next as well. DS ended up being born at 6:24, almost exactly 6 hours after I was induced! Although my birth didn't go 100% how I had planned (laboring at home in the tub, using the birth stool in the hospital, etc.) the end result was exactly what I wanted. Recovery was a breeze. DS was born on Friday and I only took pain medication through Monday morning felt back to normal by Tuesday.
So just know that if you end up having to be induced that it is not automatically then end of your plan to have a natural birth!
Re: nautral birth story - induction
Sometimes, I'm hilarious.
