Could the progesterone be making me sick?

Wow. I have never, ever been this sick with ANY of my other four pregnancies, including my healthy twin pregnancy. Usually, when the pregnancy is going well, I get sick in the morning, throw up, and go about my day as usual.

With this one, for the past three days I have been nauseous every minute of every day, throwing up with absolutely NO warning whatsoever, including in the car with my kids this morning driving down the freeway!!! I have never experienced pregnancy sickness like this before, and the only difference I can think of is the progesterone tablets I am taking. It is only 200 mg and I take it before bed. Could this be what's causing my nausea?

I don't know how I will function like this if if continues, especially since we aren't wanting to tell anyone about the pregnancy for much much longer. It's gonna rat me out! ;)

Anyone else get sick like this from these pills or is this pregnancy just kicking my butt?

Re: Could the progesterone be making me sick?

  • I don't know the scientific background on it, but the one book I've been reading (The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy) actually affectionately calls morning sickness 'Progesterone Poisoning.'  That definitely implies that, yes, progesterone is the direct culprit for our nausea and vomiting.  I'll see if I can track down a more legitimate source, but I think you've got the right idea!

  • ok, so I researched on a handful of websites and yes, the concensus seems to be that progesterone supplements can contribute quite a bit to nausea.  The x-factor could be your kidney and liver function, so make sure you are drinking plenty of water--to the point of floating away.  Obviously, I'm not a doc, but that would be my advice.

  • Thanks so much for your response!  At this point all I can keep down is water, so I am drinking like a fish! I will definitely be talking to the doctor, but honestly I guess it doesn't really matter what's causing it as I can't really stop taking the progesterone supplements and risk losing the baby because of that, so I will just have to tough it out! Better nauseous and pregnant than not nauseous and not pregnant!

The good thing is that I am only supposed to take them for 12 weeks, so maybe it will subside after that! Thanks again for your help!
