December 2010 Moms

All your LO's are so cute!

And so smart! I love watching all the videos!

I said in Pitterpatter's post yesterday that I wasn't worried about C's speech, but watching all your super smart LO's has me second guessing.

I think I am going to get some more pop up books and some flash cards and really start working with him. We work on numbers and the alphabet but he only says one, two and five for numbers and just dances when I say the alphabet and claps when I'm done.

I know every kid learns at a different pace and that I probably shouldn't be worried, but my irrational hormonal self has me kind of feeling like a big mom fail right now.

  • I wouldn't be too worried about it. Like you said...all kids learn at their own pace. FWIW, E went from saying NOTHING (not even mama) to stringing words together in about 1.5 months. Kids are wierd...

  • Our LOs are only 20 months old. There's no NEED to learn letters, identify colors, speak clearly, etc. right now. Sure, it's great if they do... but there's still three years ahead of them before they start entering Kindergarten.

My DD didn't have many words until she was 2. She didn't count, identify her colors, etc. at an early age. The only "exceptional" thing I guess was she was attempting to draw people before she was even 3. Now, she's a 7.5-year-old at the top of her class academically.

What I'm trying to say is, there's no rush. They'll all get there eventually.

  • Aww!  That sounds adorable!  Don't stress, kids pick up stuff all the time, I think just to shock us when we're not paying attention.  Seriously, Evie just brought me an alphbet magnet one day and identified it as "O", then she brought me A and R.  I was like when the eff did you learn this?  Your LO is probably just building up to something amazing.

Totally agree with this.  Plus, if they're not interested in learning something you could probably do more harm than good by pushing it on them.

Thanks ladies. I need to stop comparing my LO to others, it's hard seeing other kids his age talking better and not worrying. Plus transitioning to from a WM to a SAHM, I feel like maybe I don't do enough with him.

Every baby does develop at different paces. And you shouldn't feel like a mom fail! At all.

We actually scheduled Nathan for a speech assessment because of that reason. At his 18 month appt the dr said he should have been 20-25 words. We counted him to 15ish. In a month, he is definitely way over 25 but we're keeping our assessment appt.

If you're worried, I would call and make an assessment appt. It can take forever to get in (our appt is Oct 5th, and we booked right after his 18 month appt).  And, if you go, and they say he is right on schedule, then great! If not, then you're ahead of the game (from what I was told a lot of speech delays are not caught until later). NOW, please don't take that as your LO having one. I just know I feel like Nate is behind, so we decided to try and get ahead of the game. My mom actually said that they will laugh at us at the assessment appt.

    I agree with heyitsme.

Sure B can "say" his alphabet, but only after I prompt him for each letter - so it's really just mimicking.  If I ask him to say "a, b, c" as a phrase he's stumped.  He also isn't really putting together two word phrases yet.  And we're still only at single words or grunts and whines.

There's no mom fail here.  Don't let the hormones get you down :).

You both are right, and he understands and takes direction like a champ. Like I said I'm being irrational and hormonal and it's getting the best of me.
