What do one year olds wear to keep warm when running errands, etc? A winter jacket or a whole snowsuit thing like last year when they were infants? I live in MN so it gets cold. What do you think you'll be doing?
You shouldn't put anything on under the car seat straps. If you put your child in there in the coat then without the coat if you can pinch the straps of the carseat it isn't safe for them to have the coat on. We live in Chicago so we know all about cold winters. I will do exactly like I did last year, dress him in a warm outfit (I do lined jeans a lot with a fleece sweater) and throw a blanket over him and carry him into the stores or throw his coat on him in the car once we get to our location and carry him in.
I don't know how to make things clicky so sorry if the link doesn't come out clicky. We live in MI and we got this bunting suit for DS. Its not puffy so in a pinch I would feel comfortable putting him in his car seat with it on. It's reversible and seems very warm, or warm enough to walk from car to store. We also bought him a $45 puffy snow jacket we found a BRU on clearance for $5, yeah i'm really proud of that find lol. The jacket is an 18mos so we wont use it till the spring probably. I actually bought the bunting outfit in 12mos but love it so much I think i'm going to buy another in 18mos so I know he's set for the entire winter and to the very end of spring.

I just checked this thing out. Is it an outerwear type of thing? Like, you would wear it like a coat - putting it on before you left and taking it off when you got to wherever. It said something about nap-anywhere, so it confused me a bit, but maybe they were just playing up the comfort factor.
We live in Toledo, but I grew up in MI at the border. We get some nasty ice storms and snow blasts and the thought of having to bundle DD in a snow suit and take it off when we got in the car before putting her in the seat makes me want to pull my hair out. I'd love something that's warm but thin enough to go in the seat.

Yeah it's an outwear type suit thing. I could put DS in some leggings and a long sleeve shirt and put the bunting suit on. It's thin but warm, if that makes any sense. I would let DS go out an make snow angels, but running errands it would be great. Let me get a couple pics for you for thickness
Thanks, Hilary! I know it's a great deal on Zulily, but holy cow I hate the shipping costs and the time that it takes to finally get it here. Though, at least we'd be ordering early. Thanks for the info. Now...to actually talk myself into it and pull the trigger.

I bought a north face coat at nordstroms sale. It's lightweight but super warm. Plus it was a good deal. I plan on taking DS to car in it and then taking it off when we buckle him in and cover him with it.
I'm not sure what I'm doing yet...I guess it depends when I get out there and see what I can find. I have seen that they sell like a poncho thing that goes around the straps of the car seat. I think we will want something like a snow suit for playing or longer times in the cold and then something warm but quick for getting in and out of the car. I actually used to snap my DD1 in the car with her coat on. I don't like it and now I try to avoid it.
For sure not a whole snowsuit! Think of how hot you acutally get in the winter running errands, if you are over dressed. The same thing happens with a one year old. I would always do a hat, coat, mittens and boots when we ran errands. The hat and mittens usually came off pretty fast:) And I am in Wisconsin, so I know cold, too!

Check out etsy for car seat coat/cover. I found one shop in particular that makes ponchos that are really cute and can have extra quilted batting added in for extra warmth. I think I might get one for both DD's. And it looks like something that could be worn for a few seasons.
With DD1 we just used a coat from Carters (it comes in boy colors too). It is thin enough that it doesn't impede with the carseat straps, but has some warmth. We always keep some small blankets in the car to cover them when we're out and large blankets in case of an emergency.
Thanks ladies! Ya i don't know why I said a snowsuit because we had one for DS last year and I just used it for getting the mail. Otherwise we had him in a sweatshirt with a carseat cover over his carrier. I guess that's where my hold-up is because I can't pull that cover over the top anymore (because he's in a convertable carseat). I like that sherpa jacket from carters...or something similar that's thin. hmm decisions decisions.

My previous post was supposed to say I wouldn't let DS wear it to make snow angels but a quick walk and running errands I think it would be fine.
