Natural Birth

Intro

Hi, all. I just thought I'd post on here since I've started lurking!

I'm on the December '12 board, and it's great going through milestones with others. But DH and I have recently started interviewing doulas because of fears I have about birth and meds and interventions being forced on me.

I'm in a masters program in Early Childhood Education and learned a lot about birth and the options available to women through that. I'm glad for this, because I feel I would've been making decisions based on what others tell me to do otherwise. Wait. Scratch that -- I wouldn't even have been making my own decisions otherwise. Now I feel confident enough to have someone by my side who is there for my family and to help us make as informed decisions as possible.

I'm mainly concerned about meds and interventions and am hoping (against hope for my low pain threshold!) that I can go as natural as possible and labor as much at home as possible (though we live like 20 minutes from the hospital).

So I'll just hang out and see what knowledge I can glean from all you ladies!

  • I highly recommend Hypnobirthing by Marie Mongan - either a class or personal study. My labor was intense but not painful, the birth affirmations helped a ton. You can do it!

  • You know, I have been thinking a little more since meeting with doulas about classes, but I haven't really looked into any. An old instructor of mine is a doula, and she teaches hypnobirthing, so I may look into the class with her or (if too expensive) at least some heavy reading on it. Thanks for the suggestion!
