TTC after 35

For those of you who have had the HSG..

Hi all!  Tomorrow is my appt and while I am not nervous at all about having it done, I woke up thinking about this:

Did you have it in an exam room or was it in an X-ray room?  I am just wondering about being half naked and having to walk down a hall to a big x-ray room..THAT is freaking me out more than the procedure!

Please tell me it was a portable x-ray machine in a tiny exam room...

  • Well I think there is no one standard of how each Dr. does the test, so it's hard to say if you'll be in the same room or not. I was in a dressing room that had an inside door to the xray room, so you didn't have to go outside, you just walked through that inside door and the xray machine itself was huge and definately not portable.

You've come this far, you just going to have to wait and see, but I'm sure they do this enough to know they can't have half naked ladies traipsing down the hall all day long..lol

  • Llama,

I was wheeled in on a gurney from an exam room-type area to the x-ray area just down the hall.  I was well covered the whole time.  My Dr was the only one who saw anything below the waist, the nurse an xray tech weren't standing where they could see anything.

    Good luck tomorrow!

  • My experience was done all in the RE office. They have a suite, it was private. Also, the entire experience was not bad at all. I wish that I arrived there with no information, because I worried for nothing. Hope your experience is positive too.
  • Thanks all.. I have to go to the Radiology dept in a large hospital so that makes me think big room, long hallway, half dressed but we shall see.  It is truly the only thing I am worried about.  Weird I know!

Dh on the other hand is making me crazy with information he is finding online.  Infections, internal damage, excessive bleeding, etc.  He is just a barrel of laughs.  Tongue Tied

When I told him that I found a lot of POSITIVE stuff, like BFP's during the same cycle or within a couple cycles, etc he told me "You aren't typing the right words in the search bar".  LOL I can see his hands typing away: "Death by HSG", "My HORRIBLE experience with the HSG", "Why I regret my HSG", etc.  To say he is "Anti Hospital, Doctor and Medicine" would be the understatement of the year!

I had mine done at the imaging center at a hospital. I waited fully dressed in the waiting room. When it was time, they took us back (DH came back with me) to the xray room. In that room was an attached restroom they had me change into the johnny in, while DH hung out with the techs. I came out and hopped up on the table and we all chatted until the radiologist came in to execute the test.

    The biggest tips I can give are;

    1) Ask them to inflate the catheter balloon slowly. This makes it much less uncomfortable. Sometimes they just don't think and crank that puppy up.

    2) After the catheter is in and they are ready to move you up the table to position the xray machine over your tummy, don't be a fool and try to help them. You are on a near-frictionless table for a reason. It's no effort for them to grab and slide you up the table, but if you try and help then you will you clench muscles you really don't want to clench right at the moment.

    3) When you are done, shove the towel under your bum between your legs for the walk back to the restroom. The contrast dye is just like Karo syrup and will leak. This gives you your dignity and time to stand up and ask to see the images and then stand there and talk about them.

    4) If you profess interest in 'how all this works', they will take the time to let you look at the images and will talk you through the obvious results. Are the tubes clear? Is the ute in generally good shape? Another radiologist will have to look at it under magnification and read the film, but the one that did the test should be able to give you the basic answer right then and there.

    5) Bring your own pad for after. You don't want to use one of the 1950's ones they'll provide. Wink

Thanks for the advice!  Especially the part about showing interest.  I want to know everything they are willing to tell me right there so I don't have to worry about it (as much!) until I go see my RE next week.  :)

Mine was also done at a hospital in some sort of diagnostic room.  When I first saw the table/xray, I was really nervous.  The procedure was really fast.  It was uncomfortable but not painful.  One thing nobody told me about was how much I would leak after.  I took my dogs on a walk after and wore just a tiny pad.  I had to pretty much run home because I had dye leaking out of me like crazy.  Good luck, I am sure it will go smoothly.

Are we talking more so than a period would be on a regular maxi pad?  I took the day off for this and stupidly changed a dentist appt I had next week for the same day since I already had the day off.  The only time they had was only an hour after my HSG appt and now I am scared I will leak thru a pad that I plan to take with me.  I will literally have to go straight from the HSG to my car to the dentist.  Now I am scared the pads I am taking will not be enough.  Embarrassed

  • I had a lot of dye pushed through and the majority of it came out right after the exam, however i did spot somewhat heavily for the rest of the day (blood and dye) and then lightly for the following few days. I came armed with a bunch of giant pads but all I really needed was a medium one and I wasn't soaking through any of them.

Are they having you take ibuprofen prior to the procedure? If so you might also just run that by your dentist.

  • I've never had an HSG so I can't give you any advice there, but I just wanted to give you big ((HUGS)) and say good luck tomorrow!

You will do great and you are armed with some excellent advice from these ladies to arrive prepared and ready!

Your comments about DH typing all that crazy stuff into Google made me laugh...Mr. Negative is just nervous and worried about you :)

  • The ladies have given you great advice.  One other piece of practical advice -- I don't know if you wear glasses or not, but I was so nervous  and sweaty from the nerves(needlessly so) that my glasses fogged up and I couldn't see a thing!

I'm sure it will go great!  Can't wait to hear the results!
