Converting two twin beds to a king?

My mom offered to trade us two (exactly the same) twin beds for our queen with the idea that we can use a kit to convert them into a king.  We would love to get a little extra room if co-sleeping is going to be a long-term arrangement for us, and we think it will be.  Has anyone ever converted two twins into a king before?  How well did it work? Any recs on which product to buy to bridge the two mattresses?

  • I put 2 twin beds together, but I didn't use a kit (was a long time ago, did they even have kits then).  It worked great, I had a foam topper and that just put that over the twin mattresses.

Hopefully someone has experience with the kits.

  • I don't have experience with a kit, but in college DH didn't have a roommate so he pushed the two twin beds together and put a king sized mattress pad on top. It was fitted so it worked great.

  • They do this on cruises all the time, so I have slept on one before and it was fine. In terms of doing it, Bed Bath and Beyond sells a foam piece that you can put between the two beds to make it feel seamless. We looked at this when devising our crib sidecar.
  • I did it about 5 years ago. Would you be using a king mattress or two twins? I had issues with them pushing apart.

We would be using two twins.  DH is worried about them pushing apart, too.  It looks like we will keep using our queen for now since we are all comfortable but keep this idea as a back-up.

    Thanks for the input, all!

This is an easy fix. You can get buckle straps (I use them to hold my kayak on my car) and they will hold it super tight and never let go. You would probably need 3 of them. We're planning on doing this with 2 twins next week.

  • In the last year we have gotten a split king bed.  We definitely need to look into straps or something to hold it together - because even with the foam piece in the middle, they do move apart and I would never put a child in between us until I was 100% sure that wouldn't happen anymore.  I didn't even think of the cosleeping implications when we bought it, but I'll definitely check out the straps!
