TTC after 35

x-ray (pelvic) and TTC

I am almost 40 and have a suspected pelvic stress fracture related to low bone density and running. My sports medicine guy ordered an X-ray, repeat bone density test, and MRI to rule out a stress fracture. So far, I have had the X-ray (5 shots) and the bone density test. I am not currently pregnant, but we were planning to start trying this month. I have not yet ovulated. Is there any reason to wait to TTC? Are there issues with radiation exposure the month you are trying to conceive, particularly with exposure in the pelvic area? I am waiting to hear back from my OB on this, but I'm really anxious for some reason today. I feel like I made the wrong choice getting this done this month. Ugh. It has been a hip issue really bothering me, intermittently, for three years now, so I thought I should move forward in getting it checked out, particularly before another pregnancy (I had my LO in 2010 and we're trying for a second).

Any input much appreciated. I'm obsessing over this today.

Re: x-ray (pelvic) and TTC

  • My understanding is that a) over your lifetime, you want to minimize your exposure to radiation regardless of your gender; b) it's more an issue if you're actually pregnant than prior to ovulation.

I would hold off any radiation exposure during the 3 days prior to ovulation and then after ovulation.

Also, just as a general FYI-- make sure that you ask for a thyroid guard when you get your XRays. Lots of techs don't give you those unless you ask and recent studies have shown that many more women are having thyroid problems (which also affect fertility) and that there is a connection between this increase and exposure to radiation in XRays...
