Soy

So, I told my husband that my Dr wants to do a SA. He has not called to make the appt yet - he is swamped at work, etc etc (any excuse) probably just needs some time to warm up to the idea, I don't mind giving him SOME space.

Anyway, in the meantime, he has discovered some research on soy potentially lowering sperm count and virility. He has been eating a ton of soy products this year, including making shakes that are soy powder based and adding soy milk. So now he is convinced this is the cause. (***eyeroll*** for the self diagnosis and being convinced)

Thought I would share because 1 - can't help but laugh at his self diagnosis 2 - wondering if anyone's heard anything similar 3 - its kind of interesting research (I remember reading a while ago that soy could lead to breast cancer).

Re: Soy

  • Oh wow, good to know about that. I give any trendy thing the side eye - vibrams, gluten free diets, soy everything. He works at a company that has these shakes and soy milk free, so he had been making himself shakes for every meal. That has now stopped, and hopefully his self diagnosis will at least help him feel better. (that isn't getting him off the hook for the dr appointment though).

Thanks for the info! I am so grossed out by our food industry!!

  • I have heard this about soy in regards to both women and male fertility issues, but I dont' recall specifically where I read it. It does sound like he consumes a bit more than whats probably recommended.

Try subbing paneer for tofu, quinoa for couscous, and nut milks for soy milk. Even those three protein substitutes can drastically reduce your soy intake in a typical vegetarian diet, without putting a damper on your favorite recipes.

I eat meat, but I cook like a vegetarian most of the time. I found those to subs that don't take away from the intended dish.

Thanks Petra - I love quinoa but haven't really tried the others I've been veggie for almost 20 years minus or plus some fish here and there.  It gets a little mundane after awhile so I really appreciate your suggestions - thanks again :)

There are conflicting research studies relating to soy and breast cancer.  There is one called "the china report" or something similar that suggest that high soy diets could prevent cancer because asian women living in China have high soy diets had lower instances of breast cancer than asian women who moved to and adopted a north american diet.  Then because a significant number of Breast Cancer tumors are estrogen receptive that the phytoestrogens produced by soy could increase the chances of microtumors which would otherwise not survive to thrive and grow and become life threatening.  From all that I have learned during my treatment and from the BC doctors and post treatment nutrionist counseling, soy in moderate intake is healthy and recommended.

  • Just wanted to say thank you for all of the responses. BabyVDM, so glad to see you have been cancer free. Thank you for the input

I didn't even think about this, but I too was vegetarian for 7 years ending about 7 years ago, but because of it, I have maintained a fairly vegetarian diet, though I do regularly eat meat now. I will have to pay more attention to what I am eating - maybe we are doing a double wammy here. Yeah, his intake has been excessive, he will eat anything that is "free" and is one of those people who eats what they wants and stays thin (I am not, grrrr!)

  • Just be sure to eat organic soy to avoid the genetically modified, Monsanto stuff. There are no studies that actually show soy has any of the negative effects people theorize. Because soy does have natural plant hormones it has been guessed that they might affect humans but not shown. There are many shakes and milks out there that use other healthy vegetarian sources of protein like hemp powder and almond milk. Tofu and tempeh are healthy sources of soy. I'd say everything in moderation.

  • Oh, my husband is the same away about making appts. so I called and took care of everything myself and just told him where and when to go. Otherwise it would never get done!
