XP: anyone on Elecare or Neocate (reflux moms come in)

Im not sure if this is the right board to post on because my daughter is almost 2 months and there is no reflux board.

My pedi is starting her on Elecare to see if if it helps, and if not she will be referred to a GI specialist to see what they want to do about meds for reflux.. she's already been on zantac and prevacid... while on breastmilk and similac alimentum for her colic and reflux... nothing is helping..

Whats your experience with Elecare or Neocate? any difference ?

  • we put my daughter on Alimentum at one month because the dr basically made us. i continued to pump while removing all soy/dairy from my diet. she had blood in her stool, extremely colicky, some hives after breastfeeding, horrible gas pains etc.

She was on the Alimentum for a month. It did not clear the blood in her stool so they put her on Neocate at that time. The Neocate cleared the blood within 2 weeks, might've been sooner but that is when they tested. At that point, I slowly started reintroducing my breastmilk (dairy/soy free including hidden) to her. She was about 3.5 months old at this point. I gradually started increasing the # of breastmilk bottles per day but always did a mix of Neocate & breast milk b/c I didn't want her to forget the taste of Neocate because it took me about 2 weeks of slowly increasing the amount of Neocate/Alimentum before she would drink it.

We never tried elecare but have had a good experience with Neocate/breast milk combo

  • DD has been on Elecare for almost 2 month. It's for food allergies, but she also has reflux. We transitioned from breast milk.

She's doing great on it,but as far as the reflux goes, please be prepared, that the transition time is horrible.LO was throwing up so much, I cried every day. I was told to stick it out, 2-3 weeks. At the time I could not believe that the throw up would ever stop, but it did!

There is a message board that has a great "reflux" group.PM me and I give you the website, because I'm sure I'll get deleted if I put it in the post.

  • I am so sorry! My DS has been on Elecare for about 2 months now for milk and soy allergies, as well as for weight gain. I EP and he was diagnosed with reflux at 2 months old. So he was put on Zantac. Then at 4 months old, he started screaming and refusing to eat the expressed BM. His intake dropped significantly. He also had green, mucousy stools. Pedi tested his stool for blood and it was positive. She had me eliminate all dairy from my diet and if we needed to supplement with formula, then we were to use Nutramigen or Alimentum. Eliminating dairy from my diet didn't help and DS actually lost weight and flat out refused to eat. It was so upsetting. Pedi then had us not give him any more breastmilk, since it seemed as though he had other underlying allergies. She put him on Elecare and referred us to pedi GI. Pedi GI agreed with me stopping BF and having him on strict Elecare. He is also now in Prevacid for reflux and not Zantac. He is doing so well on Elecare. He is gaining weight and seems to be thriving. It took about 2-3 weeks of being on Elecare before we saw a big improvement. The formula smells and apparently tastes horrible, so it may take some getting used to for your baby. Initially for a a day or so we were told to add a teaspoon or so of flat Sprite/7 Up/Sierra Mist to help improve the taste until DS got used to the taste. That helped a lot! Good luck!
