Birthday party for hearing impaired daughter?

DD is turning 2 very soon, and she has sensorineural hearing loss. Since she's only going to be 2 and probably won't even remember it, we're going to have a small get-together with family and some close friends, and some of the children from her playgroups. We'd like to have some sort of entertainment (for DS's 4th we had a reptile party and had someone with snakes and other reptiles come out) but want something that DD can be involved with too. What sort of birthday entertainment would be good for a hearing impaired birthday girl?

Re: Birthday party for hearing impaired daughter?

  • I went to a party of another hearing impaired boy and they had an ASL storytime. The mom asked one of his teachers of the deaf to come to the party and sign a storybook. It was one of those storybooks that have pictures only and no words. It was fun and the other kids(ones a bit older than the birthday boy) there had fun learning some ASL.

You could also do a simple version of ASL bingo and get everyone involved.

  • Loading the player...
  • ooh! ohh! Another option would be to teach everyone a childhood song using sign.

I sing and sign a revamped version of "Three Blind Mice" with Nate. he likes the sneeze part....

    Three nice mice (x2)

    See how they play(x2)

They're always polite when they nibble their cheese

They always say thank you, they always say please

They cover their noses whenever they sneeze (aaahchew!)

They're three nice mice, three nice mice

  • Something art-based? I was going to suggest paint-your-own pottery, but I don't know if that can be done outside a studio.

I considered a balloon artist when I was looking for birthday party ideas. Some of them can do really nifty stuff. Two might be a little young to really enjoy that, though.

If she likes jumping/bouncing, you could rent a bounce house. I think some places even have busses that are outfitted like a mini play-place.

  • Does your DD wear aids? My son has hearing loss as well and wears hearing aids. I guess we just did normal parties with play, for instance - 1st was at home, messy cake, 2nd -fun pizza party at the park with a cool playground, 3rd was at a Boys and Girls Club with a huge play room, and playground, 4th was at an indoor waterpark, and 5th was in the backyard with a huge bounce house. He has had parties recently that we invited from his special ed class (they are deaf or hard of hearing) and as long as they are playing and having fun, the hearing loss shouldn't affect the play. Even though DS didn't remember his 2nd birthday, he had a blast running and playing on that day. He also loves music and art, and I think he loves drums and music because of the vibrations and the load noise.
