Pregnancy Food

Anyone have any favorite pregnancy friendly foods? I've got a list of different foods that should be eaten and how much every day but it seems like a LOT of food and a LOT of preparation...

ie: 6+ servings whole grains, 4  calcium, 3-4 Yellow/green/leafy veggies, 3 vitamin c, 3 protein, 3 iron, 1-2 other veggies/fruit, 4 fats....

Some overlap - - like: Edamame (Protein, Calcium, Iron), Yogurt (Calcium & Protein), String Cheese (Calcium & Protein)

What are you favorite healthy foods and foods to have on hand for snacks? Please share anything that you've been eating alot of or WANT to eat alot of to make sure you are providing for baby the right way.  Also, I am a plus-sized pregnancy so watching my calories is also important to make sure I do not gain too much weight or gain weight too fast... Thanks!

- - my cravings have been for breakfast foods and macaroni and cheese! Not the best choices... :(

Re: Pregnancy Food

  • My typical pregnancy day foodwise looked like this:

All-bran or some bran cereal for breakfast

mid-morning snack of oatmeal and/or fruit

lunch was kind of whatever -  soups, salads, sandwiches, pasta, baked potatoes, etc.

afternoon snack of some kind of carb and protein (pretzels and hummus, almond butter on apples, string cheese and wheat thins)

dinner was also pretty much anything goes.

  • Snacks I have available:

low fat/low salt sliced cheese (great source for Calcium & protein)

    hummus with carrots

trail mix (get the ones with the healthier nuts like walnuts and almonds; not peanuts)

    hard-boiled egg

slice of whole wheat bread with peanut butter

    --------

For breakfast, I have homemade granola with yogurt and topped with fresh fruit, plus 2T wheat bran (helps with constipation).  I also drink 2 glasses of milk at a minimum, in addition to yogurt.  I also make sure that I have lots of fruits & veggies at every meal.

  • At first I was craving anything and everything! The thing that really helped me stay under control was repetition. I eat the same breakfast (almost) every morning.

    Blueberry - banana parfait:

    1/4 Cup Grape Nuts cereal
    1/2 - 1 Cup of Greek yogurt
Sprinkle of cinnamon and drizzle of honey
2-3 small handfuls of fresh blueberries
    1 medium banana sliced
1/4 Cup Grape Nuts cereal sprinkled on top

It's actually gotten to the point where this is my biggest craving! Plus I stay full and satisfied!

Another great thing I turn to is a good old fashioned smoothie. It's a great way to get in a serving of spinach, fruit, and dairy ( milk or yogurt )  all in one. It's my favorite "midnight snack"

Nuts, freeze dried fruits, and low-sodium vegetable juice are also my go to snacks.

Hope this helped! Wishing you the best of luck!
