March 2013 Moms

When are you having your baby shower?

I know its early, but my family is on cloud 9 and they have already started pre-planning the baby shower. Nothing will be set in stone until I'm out of the first trimester, of course.

However, my mother wants to have it the second week of November, and here's her reasoning:

March, 2013: Due

February, 2013: Too close to due date (my DB was born at 22 weeks, and I was 3 weeks early. Family history indicates premature births)

January, 2013: Christmas credit card bills come in - not a fun shopping month.

December, 2013: Christmas

November, 2013: Late Nov is Thanksgiving and Black Friday, but early Nov works.

November does seem a little early too me, but being such a hardcore type a planner, I'm kinda okay with it. I'd be more than half way through the pregnancy and we'd know the sex of the baby. I'd also have family flying in from NY to attend, so I want to be respective of the cost of flights before I OK a date.

Anyone have any input?

Re: When are you having your baby shower?

  • We are having the same dilema.  I live 5 hours away from my family so I would have to drive there for my shower.  I really don't want any gifts.  We are going to have a sip and see at a winery in June.  That way we don't have to worry about the weather.

  • I have no idea if anyone will even throw us a shower and most of our family doesn't know yet. So, I have no idea when our shower would be, if someone would throw it for us.

We also live 750+ miles away from our family and we can't afford to travel just for a shower, soooo hopefully if someone does do one, they'll do it at Christmas time when we are already planning to be in the area of our family for a week or more...

ETA: I know that not traveling for a shower sound harsh, but it would either be a 15 hour drive ($300 in gas!) or flying which would also be $300-$500 after we rent a car. We're already spending thousands of dollars this year and next year to travel to see our family, so we really can't afford any more trips right now.

  • I am thinking Nov or Jan will probably be the best times to have it/them. Few of my friends have kids so I am not sure I need to worry as much about people's Christmas budgets. As for my family-I would rather them get a baby related item for me for Christmas in any event.

For you-would it make sense to do a January shower and tell family members that you do not want Christmas gifts this year (assuming you get gifts from your family still). Do you think that you will have a friends only shower? Maybe that one could be in January.

  • My best friend is talking about having one for me in January.
  • The majority of my friends and family have little ones around, so money is always tight, especially during the holidays. I'm probably going to do a large shower with everyone - it will be coed. Overall, anticipating to invite 70 people (more than I sent for my first wedding!) and most will come.

  • My mom and MIL were thinking January. I would even be willing for february (My due date is 3/19) but my SIL is due feb 14. I for sure want her to be there. My feeling is most ppl for the most part dont spend a ton of $$ on baby shower gifts beside your really close family members and they will regardless even if its after christmas. Maybe I could be wrong? Even if the baby is born early it will not be home by the time you have your shower  (if you had it after christmas) It would still prob be in the NICU typically babies born early come home would they reach 35 wks gestation or later on average depending how they are doing.. But I say what ever is easy for you and the ppl throwing it, is what ppl should go with.

    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • After the baby comes....

So either a party with the Bris (day 8), or the weekend of the naming (if it is a girl), done typically a week or two after she is born.

  • I think whenever you want to have your baby shower you should! I think you are being AWFULLY considerate of other people's ability to come to the shower so if ANYONE ever had the gall to say to you, "Why are you having it so early?" They should be tarred and feathered! (hahahaha).

As far as the other post talking about gifts and being so far away, may I make a suggestion?  Maybe register at Amazon.com. DH and I registered on there for our wedding because we are both orignally from the North, now live in the South, and our wedding was at the beach. SO, we were kind of on the same page as you are with the no gifts thing because people would be traveling for the wedding and paying for hotels and whatnot, BUT we were advised by earlier generations that registering was something that should be done (even if it was only for a few things). Amazon offers people the ability to either find the item at a store and tell your registery that they will be providing the gift purchased elsewhere, or they can purchase it at Amazon.com and have it shipped to them to bring to the shower to give to you, OR (my favorite) have the gift shipped directly to you. That way, you don't have to worry about how to get all the stuff home that you just got.

  • I was thinking the same thing about timing.  I told my good friend (who volunteered herself all too willingly to throw me one the second she found out) I would like February....although I realize its super close to due date.  Oh well.....hopefully I won't go into early labor....but thats the risk I suppose I want to take.

  • I am hoping for early January.

We have another baby in the family being born at the beginning of December.  That shower is in October and with the holidays, my teacher conferences, and everything else, November and December are too crazy.

  • We're not having one (second baby)....but OP I think you could get away with doing it in early December...the weekend of the 1st or the 8th?

  • It's still so early.  The 2 or so people I would guess will offer, have done so as of yet.

  • Haven't thought about this, though I'm sure my family has....

only thing is that I don't want one after the birth...  We don't plan on having a lot of "stuff" for the baby, so if people want to buy us things, its going to be all the necessities.  I would want my shower early enough that I can buy the rest of what I need or return things that we don't.

  • With DS #1 I had it at 32 weeks.  If I were you I'd still do early Feb/ late March provided you aren't travelling.  I've had multiple friends that have (unfortunately) had micro preemies and had their showers after LO was born.  They have found it a nice retreat from the NICU and refreshing to be able to laugh and celebrate. If  you were to have the baby before the end of January (s)he would still be in the hospital at that time so it isn't like you would need the items you would receive at your shower before then.

  • I'm considering January as a safe month, otherwise November is the next best option, imo. Honestly, though, its up to my family since they are planning it, and whatever they want goes - I feel humbled that so much effort will go into it. Whether early or later, doesn't really matter to me. I think the excited part of me thinks "the sooner the better!" =)

  • I have a feeling all of us March gals are going to be dealing with that same thing. Nov - Dec are off limits. January is rough because of Christmas and all the bills piling up. We chose the first weekend of Feb. That way I'm not too cranky yet but it's still not crushing those who are coming back from Christmas expenditures! I hope you guys find a date that works - and accept that some people will not make it - and you can't accommodate everyone, unfortunately. Choose a day that works best for you!!

  • I haven't told my family yet but I'm guessing we will have it in Christmas while I'm home. We live 1800 miles from home so it takes 31 hours to drive and we don't want to have to make that trip twice!!

  • We will probably have ours the first couple weeks in January - It is after all of the holidays settle down... plus, even though it is a big Credit Card month, Nov and Dec are big spending months anyway!! Febuary is way too close so January it is... but be sure to get the invites out early so people can prepare their budget accordingly ;)

  • MY MOM IS PLANNING MY SHOWER FOR THE FIRST WEEKEND IN FEBRUARY CUZ IM DUE AT THE END OF MARCH SO WE WILL BE OK...

  • My aunt wants to put on a baby shower for me in Ohio (I live in Oklahoma). I have a lot of family there still so we will have a shower after the baby is born so everyone can see the baby at the same time.  It will be like a Welcome Shower about one or two months after LO is born.

My mom and sister will want to throw me a shower here in Oklahoma for some friends and possibly any other family that may be able to come here, like my step-grandma that visits quite often.  We will probably have the shower end of January or early February.
