Bottle feeding question

I plan to follow the "one up, both up" rule in regards to feeding our twins. However, they will be formula fed from day one, so I'm wondering what is the easiest way to go about bottle feeding once my husband is back at work and I'm totally on my own.

Should I stagger their feedings a bit? Give the one that wakes up first a bottle, then give the other their bottle immediately following? I can't really seem to figure out the logistics of giving them both bottles at the exact same time. I feel like my arms will go numb if I'm holding them both off to the sides!

Re: Bottle feeding question

  • I feed one in my lap and one in a boppy next to me.

  • We still do one up both up.  Ours generally STTN now, but if they happen to wake up hungry we both get up.  They are only up for 45 minutes to an hour and are back out again.  We tried the staggering method and after a few days all we got were babies that were off their great schedule where they both ate together and slept together. We felt like idiots.  It was exhausting.  I agree with PP that said feed one in your lap an one in the Boppy when you're all alone. It works out well that way.

  • Take two boppies,  Place them on the couch facing you, put a small pillow under the boppies to prop them up, and sit in between them and face out.  So they are siiting sideways looking at you and you are facing out.  Ready, aim, fire!

  • We fed back to back when alone for a long time. Around 3 or 4 mo they could be fed in boppies, so that made it easier. When both home, we each took one to feed.
  • my girls had feeding issues at first and thats why they were in the NICU so I fed them one right after the other the first 2 months (which was a pain and felt like I was ALWAYS feeding a baby).  Once they had no issues pacing themselves I would put them in their boppys or R&P's and prob the bottles w/ blankets so they could eat at the same time. I of course stayed by them the whole time incase one would cough or anything. I would just alternate burping them and this is what saved me TONS of time. It becomes pretty ritual and easy after a few times of doing it.

  • We use Boppy newborn loungers for feedings alone if they are both up. If one is still sleeping, we will let them sleep and feed one, then wake up and feed the next.

  • I started out feeding one at a time but that stressed me out immensely, just waiting for one to wake up screaming while I had my hands full with the other one. I started out by putting them in Boppy pillows in front of me on the floor (with a blanket draped over the Boppy to keep them from falling in the hole). I eventually moved to a Boppy on either side of me on the couch. When one needed to be burped, I gave the other one a paci then swapped, then continued on with the feedings. It wasn't elegant but it worked. We did that method until around 5 months when they couldn't be trusted on the couch, and I did bottles in high chairs. We continued it that way until they started holding their own bottles around 7.5 months old.
