MIL doesnt respect that i dont want spanish being spoken to my baby

i have a 4month old baby girl and i keep telling my MIL that i want her to know English first before she learns Spanish. Now she speaks clear English and yet she still speaks Spanish to her. I have no idea what to do.

  • Tell her again how much you do not like it and it may confuse your child and prevent her from learning correctly. She should respect your wishes.

  • I agree with PP that she should respect your wishes but also your DH should really be the one to lay down the law.

I guess a couple other things are at play here, too. How often is she w the baby? Do you also speak Spanish? I think it's worse if you are not fluent but if you are and she only sees the baby once in awhile, I might let it go. Then again, I might also have DH tell her that if she refuses to speak English to the baby, she won't see her as often. I guess it would depend on my mood and hormones. Ha ha ha!

  • Both my husband and I are teachers who hold advanced degrees in language learning.  Perhaps it will put you at ease to know that your child will not be confused or slowed down at all in her English acquisition by also having Spanish spoken to her...

It is actually to her benefit to learn both languages very early on and her brain will not have any trouble separating the two.  We have friends where Dad spoke Arabic when he was alone with the kids, Mom spoke Spanish when she was alone with the kids, and they spoke English when they were all together.  The kids had no trouble with keeping the languages straight--it's something a young brain has no problem with.

  • While your MIL should respect your wishes, you should consider researching the benefits of introducing multiple languages early in childhood.  As the above poster mentioned, this is the time to introduce another languages!  The earlier, the better!
