Success after IF

Intro and a ?

Hi!  **big wave to all the girls I recognize!!**  I'm TJ, I started out posting on 3T, then moved to PAIF, and now I'm so excited to be here at SAIF!  My little girl E was born 7/29 by an amazing med-free natural birth.  I can't believe how in love I am with her, but I also can't believe how much work a newborn is.  Whew.  I can't wait to get to know the rest of you ladies, and I've loved seeing all the intros recently.  I read the posts while BFing, but finding time to actually post is much harder.  Hopefully I'll be able to find the time to check in regularly.

And now for my question - what can you tell me about mylicon drops and gripe water?  E is very gassy, and gets hiccups several times a day which I think may be contributing to the gas issue.  Has anyone used either of these?  TIA.

  • Congratulations on your baby girl! We used gas drops a couple times for DD when she was a few weeks old. They seemed to work, but who knows it may have just been a coincidence.

Welcome! Congrats on your little girl!

We used (sometimes still do) the mylicon drops for Adalyn's gas.  She's been getting breastmilk and formula bottles, and we just put the drops in every bottle.  Since you're breastfeeding I'm not quite sure how you would do it.

    GL!

  • The gas drops don't do anything to stop the hiccups, but might help if she is swallowing a lot of air when she has them.  DD is also super gassy.  We give her the gas med with every bottle - she takes it straight from the dropper, so you should be able to do that with BFing too.  I'm honestly not sure if it really helps or not, but it's safe to use, so I figure it can't hurt.  We had been using gripe water in the evenings and it really only helped calm her down while we were giving it to her with the dropper - it didn't really seem to relieve the gas much.  Our pedi said it's normal and some babies just don't handle discomfort well, but they grow out of it.  It seemed to be worst at 6-7 wks, then started slowly improving from there.  She still has a few spells a day, but they usually don't last nearly as long and aren't as bad.

  • Welcome and congrats!

DS was early and we had all kinds of pooping (basically lack thereof) and gas issues for months.  We did use mylicon drops, but they really only help initial bubbles and not anything that is forming farther into the intestines.  So it did help reduce formula bubbles, but in the end, time and baby body growth/maturity was what made the difference.   I had major supply issues, but gave DS as much as I could and I did notice certain foods set him off....mainly obvious stuff like chili, but have you tried keeping a food diary for a week or so along with gassiness levels to see if anything coincides?

  • Welcome and Congratulations on your LO!

I remember using some sort of gas drops for DS1, but it was a long time ago and I don't remember what it was or if we thought it worked much.  We didn't use anything for DS2.

One thing we did do was the pushing their little legs up to their chest repeatedly to help relieve the gas pains.  If nothing else the movement was enough to distract them from being fussy. :)

  • Congratulations on your LO and welcome! When P was an infant I never used gripe water, but infant massage really helped get his gas out. He would usually calm down right after. The is a certain way you can rub their bellies and then bicycle their legs. With P ALL of his gas would come out ;) You can search for "infant massage to relieve gas" on YouTube. Good luck!

  • Congratulations!!  The pedi had us start using mylicon drops to help with our daughter's gas.  We gave it to her religiously at first.  But, it really didn't seem to make much difference.  Now, we only give them to her on occasion.

  • Congrats!!  DS was pretty gassy, especially in the evenings.  I'd give him the drops after nursing.  He was a hard one to burp which compounded the gas situation, I think the drops did help with that.  And once he started burping better he spit up less too, which made everyone happier.
