Baby Showers

Timing of host/hostess gifts

Do you give them the gifts afterward or are they supposed to open in front of everyone?

Also the men whose house we're having the party in are expecting a baby about two months after me. Would it be okay to make their host gift baby related?

Re: Timing of host/hostess gifts

  • Give it at the end of the shower as it's winding down, or even over.  No- they shouldn't open them in front of everyone.  This is a personal thank you from you to them - not a gift opening event.

And yes, it being baby related is fine.

  • I'd give it at the end of the shower. I've always seen it done after people start to leave and the person/couple is loading the gifts in the car that way people have left. Having been a hostess before, I'd rather get it at the end and not in front of people. As for the gift being baby related, you can get whatever you want, but I wouldn't make it baby related. The hostess gift should be for the hostess, and it might be nice to give them something just for them especially during a time when they're already going to be getting a lot of baby stuff. I'm sure either will be appreciated, but I'd make the gift more of a gift for them, not baby.

While I agree that it could be baby related, I also agree with the PP who said it would also be nice if it was something just for them. While expecting a new baby is great, it's a bit old when everything revolves around the coming baby. I haven't stopped being the person I was and enjoying the things I enjoyed (well, maybe except for wine!) just because I'm pregnant.

Sorry if that seemed a little like a rant.
