People need to STFU (re: DD not crawling yet)

Don't know if I told you guys or not, but the Dr's assessment at DD's 12 month check up is that she lacks muscle tone in her legs. That explains why she won't crawl, won't pull herself to standing (she has done it a total of two times so far) and won't attempt to walk when we're holding her hands.

My mom came over last week and she made a comment that really grated my nerves "Your SIL and I were talking, and she made an excellent point. Your DD is so efficient at rolling around it only makes sense she doesn't want to try crawling or walking."

That and I get a lot of "She's a little lazy bum, isn't she".

Thing is, DD WANTS to crawl and walk. I can see her trying so hard to get on all four, but the second she succeeds, she just falls flat on her tummy because she cannot hold the position. And she LOVES it when we stand her up. You try to sit her down and she'll stick her legs as straight as she can because she wants to be up.

But no matter how much I explain it to my mom, SIL, and whoever will listen, and despite the fact that the Dr is sending DD to physical therapy to help strengthen her legs, all I get are the "lazy" comments. I hope PT really helps because I am SO over those comments already :(

Ah. Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better now.

  • Awwwww don't listen to them. You know your child better than anyone else. I think people need to stop worrying about these milestones. I mean our children will sit up, crawl, walk ect. when they are ready. Now of course if your Dr. says otherwise and there is something to be concern then yes do what is needed to help your child but it really makes me upset when people worry parents about not hitting certain milestones at a certain time frame.

  • Mama, this is one of DS's exact problems. I totally get where you are coming from. ((hugs))

PT has helped tremendously. DS has been going weekly for about 4 or 5 months now, and he can now get from point A to point B in the house. It is much like the army crawl meets the worm; not quite crawling but definitely able to get around on his belly. He loves PT too. We just go play for an hour. DH and I have learned a lot and are able to work with him at home too. Without PT, we would probably still be working on rolling over lol.

You know how to reach me if you need to talk. :)

  • Oh, I get that too about walking. Lydia took her first steps on July 31st. Since then, she has taken maybe 10 steps randomly, but then will sit and start crawling again. It's not that she's lazy, she just knows that crawling is faster. Soooo...people say she is being "lazy".

Don't let it get to you. Really. People say some stupid things some times, and this is not something you need to worry about. She WILL crawl and walk one day...others just need to shut their mouths!

  • So sorry, that really stinks. I'm sure PT will be great for her!
  • It's so hard to ignore other's comments, but you just have to. I wish making comments about other kids development was considered taboo. Like it would be just as bad as if someone commented on a person's weight or whatever else that might be considered taboo. I just don't understand when it comes to babies it's acceptable to comment on weight, development and such. People just need to STFU!
  • How mean! especially coming from family members. They'd get major stink eye from me! Sorry they're being that way! :(

  • I hate, hate, hate it when people call children lazy. All children are programmed to learn. If a child is delayed in a skill that means that there is something developmentally that needs to be addressed. This applies to physical milestones, language development, reading, classroom behavior and social development. No child is "lazy". I don't think that can happen until much later and even then I think some of that is avoidance behavior because a child is struggling and has not received the assistance they need or there are other factors in their home life inhibiting learning.

  • Whenever people make comments about Jack not fully walking yet I say it's because he's so smart. ;)

They need to STFU. It's so hard to think of whitty, smart comebacks when it's family. I know, personally, when my mom says something I thinkbis wrong unusually just get pissed off. I think one thing that they need to keep in mind is Every kid is different and she will learn.

Plus, she can break dance. I bet THEY can't break dance.

  • Don't you just love it when people get together and talk about YOUR life. Nothing more irritating than hearing someone says, "Suzy STFU and I were talking about you and........". It is an instant tune out.  I then go, oh look, better people, byeseeyoulater.

Sorry for their unthoughtful words. Good luck with PT. It will help leaps and bounds.

  • Ugh, with comments like those I assume they are both perfect, no?

I'm sure the the PT will be a huge help and DD will make great gains.  Will you have to wait long for the referral process to go through?

Thankfully, no. Finding a physical therapist who specializes in pediatrics was VERY hard. I must have called over a dozen places, but once I found one, I was able to get an appointment within two weeks (the appointment is this coming Friday)

  • GL with your appointment.  PT has helped DD tremendously.  (She isn't crawling yet either so I feel your pain.)  People really do need to STFU...milestones are overrated.
