2nd Trimester

If you've had a UTI, come on in!

Well I'm pretty sure I'm getting my 1st pregnancy UTI. Just curious as to what your dr. has done for you medication wise. I've had a few of them before and have either been able to head them off with cranberry pills/juice and tons of water or my usual course of bactrim but I don't know if the pills will work and don't know what the pg safe antibiotics are. Thanks for any help!

Re: If you've had a UTI, come on in!

  • I thought I had one last week and my office started me (as a precaution, while we waited for the results) on macrobid. Apparently it is a safe, class B, antibiotic. I didn't end up having one, I guess it was just normal frequency of a twin preg, but I have a feeling your doc will want you to start on something asap. It's not an emergency, but the way my nurse put it is "it's safer to be on an antibiotic than to have an infection while pregnant."

GL! I hope you feel better!

  • I had one and I took macrobid.  (I'm pretty sure that was the spelling).  It was safe for PG.

  • I have had many many UTI's before pregnancy and two during pregnancy already! so this is a norm for me in my life unfortunately. Macrobid is the #1 go to antibiotic they use during pregnancy. is a twice daily, for 7 days antibiotic. If you have issues with this antibiotic and it doesnt treat it then they will use something stronger. Probably a 3 day instead of 7 and it'll usually be sulfurac based my guess. Most recent one i had was sulfurac antibiotic. If you were to read the label it says dont use if pregnant. But my doctor says most are just fine in the 1st and 2nd trimesters of pregnancy. The warning is for 3rd trimester women. So be sure to ask your doctor and trust that they will perscribe something that is necessary to fight infection and outways the risk to the baby. Doctors know what they are doing.

  • I have chronic UTIs. Macrobid is also what my OB tends to use during pregnancy. Another option is Amoxicillin, although for me it doesn't work because my UTI bacteria are resistant to it. Please don't try to treat a UTI with cranberry juice during pregnancy. Trust your OB, do your research, and take the antibiotics.

  • I was never symptomatic of uti's during pregnancy, but I had one with DD and one this time around that we're just caught on the regular urines that my dr does. One time I was given macrobid an the other time it was amoxicillin.

Doctors know what they're doing - trust them to give you medication to fix your bacterial infection.  You are doing yourself a great disservice (and causing unnecessary stress in your body) to try and "fight off" a bacterial infection with extra water.  Yes, it helps, but bacteria in your urinary tract can easily spread to your kidneys and then your bloodstream, which is a life threatening condition.

Im not trying to fight this one off...I'm to late for that :( I'm at patient 1st now and hopefully they will give me some good antibiotics! Wish I could've seen my OB today but they are full :(

  • I was just at the dr for this on Friday and they gave me macrobid.  Seems to be the most common treatment for UTI's.  Good luck!

Yay!  I apologize if I came across a little harsh.  I hope anyone else reading this with similar symptoms goes out for antibiotics.  I read so many woman on here saying they don't want to take the antibiotics because they are pregnant and I just want to strangle them.  Being septic or having a kidney infection is a whole hell of a lot worse than a simple antibiotic/UTI.

    Feel better!!!  :-)

Thank u! I don't play around with UTIs. I know what the symptoms are and if I can catch one super, super early, I'll usually be able to avoid it with cranberry pills and water. But being pregnant especially is no time to play dr! I just started with symptoms today and I ran to the dr! I don't want a kidney infection or worse!

Thankfully, I have a weeks worth of Microbid and those glorious magical pills that turn your pee orange! Ahh sweet relief!

  • I spent a day in the ER with a UTI at 18 weeks.  I was given a liter of IV fluids, 1 gram of IV Rocephin, and 10 days of Macrobid.  Apparently Macrobid is safe in pregnancy until the last 4 weeks.

  • I am on macrobid.  Day 7 is tomorrow (my last day of pills).  Today around 11 hours after I'd taken my last pill - I started to feel the signs of the infection again.  Do you think I should go back to the Dr tomorrow and ask if I can extend to 10 days?  I get 1 or 2 uti's / year so I think I might be resistant to the meds.  I'd hate to stop taking them only to have a full blown infection again in a few days...

If you have any advice, let me know.  Thanks!
