Anyone whose LO hasn't started counting yet I have an idea on a way to help them learn to count. With my kids every time we would go up or down stairs I would count. They seemed to enjoy it, and it really helped them learning to count - we have 13 steps at our house that we go up and down quite a few times a day.
Picking up legos, blocks, toys, etc. is a great time to count as well. If anyone has any alphabet and letter recognition suggestions please let me know! Colors are somewhat obvious but letters are a little trickier for me. My 5yo son knows all his letter sounds but doesn't know all of his letters yet (he's getting there though).
ETA: My 5yo son knows his alphabet. He just doesn't recognize all of his letters yet. Not sure if the way I worded it was clear.
Re: Suggestion on counting
Yay for step counting! What a good idea! We just tell him to "step" with every step because he gets distracted by the neighbors or cars and stops in the middle of the staircase (from the porch)... Man, I hope I don't have an ADD kid...
Alphabet with a five year old I can do! Books of course are a good start. My class always loves Chicka Chicka Boom Boom the most. You can find a ton of alphabet books at the library. I would start with the letters in his name. That's where most preK/K teachers start with kiddos. You can find all sorts of ideas for letter recognition on pinterest on the teachers' boards. You can write the letters in shaving cream, make them from playdough and place them on a board with the letters written out, "fish" magnetic letters out of sand tables with a paperclip on the end of a dowel rod, etc., etc. I would suggest combining writing the letters with learning the names, as well as matching the letter with itself (like a matching game.)

Also, do you let your kids play games on the computer? Have you ever seen Starfall? It's the most awesome sight for letter and reading games ever!! Click on the ABCs for little guys and the other links for older elementary kids.

This link has a bunch of games too:

Great idea about counting steps, thanks! I have done the counting of blocks when he puts them away, but I am not consistent with it. DS does "get" counting, he just keeps counting 1, 1, 1, 1... lol.
I agree about spelling LO's name to help with letters. DS has a placemat with his name on it & that's probably how we started teaching him. We point to the letters spelling his name together & when we're done, he points to himself.
Like previously mentioned, the foam mat letters & Super Why have really helped, too.
And we have a few picture books that is broken down by the alphabet, so the letter is in the upper corner of the page containing pics starting with that letter. As I would point to all the pics naming them, I would point to the letters, too, treating them as just another picture on the page. (I call them "big A & little a", for example, for upper case & lower case.)
Other than that, just pointing to the words as you read them on the page helps, too, I think.
I thought you needed a suggestion on counting,so I was going to say stair counting as well.My Lo loves this, everytime we go up and down the stairs he insists that we count. Its like a game to him.He can count all the way up tp six by himself. All the numbers after that he just hums the sound or repeats what you say.
