Milk intolerance? Warning, TMI

So DD has had diarrhea for the past 5 days. For the first two days it was literally every 30 minutes. The past few days it's been sporadic. I took her to the pedi (a different one bc Z's is on vacation) on Thursday, and she said to stop giving her milk for 24 hrs to see if that helps. I didn't really notice a difference, she was still having diarrhea. Over the weekend, she got a bit better, her nasty rash on her bum cleared up, and she was happy and playing again.

DH told me that yesterday she only would poop after her bottle of wcm, but instead of runny, it was mushy. And today, she had the mushy poop about 10 minutes after her morning bottle. Is it possible that she's gone this long on wcm (since a year) and to only start having a reaction now? I would have thought that if she is lactose intolerant (like DH) it would show up as soon as she starting drinking milk? I'm going to buy soy milk and see if it helps. Maybe she just had a stomach bug and it's starting to clear up. What do you ladies think?

  • Sounds like lactose intolerance....It doesnt always start right away.

  • She usually goes to Gupta, but I had to take her to Kids Korner. I just don't know if I trust them! But then I tell myself, the woman there is obviously a pedi, so why would she not know what she's doing? She was breastfed until 8 months, then I switched her to formula, it was just the regular Similac Advance. Is there a difference between milk intolerance and lactose intolerance? I think I'll call Gupta's office today, I just don't know how they'll be able to tell if that's what it is or not?

  • Well, I can tell you from my experience with soy/milk and B, it doesn't sound like she is intolerant.  B has an official milk sensitivity, not even an intolerance.  He had to be put on soy formula at 2 months because of several reasons - his diapers were NASTY (he wasn't digesting the milk proteins, and since you don't seem to mind about TMI, his poop was pretty much all milk curds), he was gassy all the time, and poor little man was so fussy.  The instant soy formula was in his bottle, it stopped, and he was normal happy baby.  We tried WCM at 12 months, and we started super super slow.  As in, we did 1 ounce in 1 bottle for 5 days, then 2, and so on.  We had wishful thinking that when he started pooping more with 1 ounce, it was just other things we were feeding him.  The poop, gas, etc started immediately.  We stopped at 2 ounces and gave him soy milk, and once again it stopped right away.  Based off that, I'd say your daughter isn't intolerant if she could handle milk for awhile.  B is sensitive, and can still handle yogurt and some cheese cooked in things.

Is anything else different in her diet?  I thought LO was having a milk intolerance but it was actually Mandarin oranges that were making her belly to acidic and giving her diaper rash.  When we were eliminating different things, I was told to try things for a week and see if everything would clear up.  Maybe try it for a longer timeframe, too.  Sick babies suck :(

My babysitter told me she had chicken alfredo at her house on Monday and the diarrhea started on Tuesday. But that's it. I even stopped giving her fruit for a couple of days bc the pedi said it turns her urine acidic and was burning her vaginal area. It's weird, she doesn't get a diaper rash, it looks like her lips get burned and the whole area gets beet red. So I just put vaseline or Live Clean non petroleum jelly to create a barrier so now the redness is gone.

This is why I'm thinking it's more a stomach bug than anything, because she's been on wcm for 2 months with no issues, and she hasn't eaten anything new. She was around my friends baby who was getting over an illness, so maybe she caught the tail end of something from her. The only thing is that she hasn't had a fever at all. I'm at a loss. She's going to her regular pedi at 2pm today, so hopefully he can give us some answers!

  • It sounds like a stomach bug to me. Milk will go right through you if you have a stomach bug.  Milk+bug+ a lot of fruit = mess. Also for her rash, add extra water to help dilute her urine, and Aquaphor works great as a barrier too. Watch the rash close so it doesn't turn into a yeast rash. ( You probably already know that though)

  • I hope it's just a bug too, and it passes soon!
