Doppler Q for anyone with success

Last night DH and I messed around with the Sonoline B doppler we bought (previous pregnancy). After about 15 minutes I found our little running horse but the actual BMP wouldn't come up on the screen. We could hear it though.

At our last doctors appointment DH recorded the heartbeat so we played it off his phone to compare and it sounded very similar (like a little gallop). Anyone else hear it but not have the numbers show up on the screen or are we nuts?

Re: Doppler Q for anyone with success

  • Sometimes I have to gently press on LO to get him/her to move around so that I can get a good read. But it works most of the time. On my Sonoline there are 3 choices for settings in measuring the heart rate. I can't remember what exactly each one means, but I think one is an average, one you measure like a stop clock, and one is the actual beats as it is reading them... I always stick with the first mode and the HB is always around 150's.

    Hope that helps.

  • I have this problem too, so I just time the beats myself so that I get a better idea of what the heart rate is at. The number that shows on the screen is always off.

  • This happens to me all the time.  I don't put much trust in the numbers, anyway.  As long as I can hear it and it sounds ok, that's good enough for me.

  • Count the beats for 6 seconds, then multiply by 10. That's what we did in the office. Baby's rate fluctuates constantly, so that gives you a rough estimate. We looked for a rate 120-170/180.

  • Mine will only show the BPM if it's got a really good feed on it and loud.  Sometimes after I find it I have to move it around a little still to get a better sound and reading.

  • I have never used this type of dopplar, but you are really early still.  That could have had something to do with it?  And if you could only pick it up for a second, that could also be part of it.  Good luck!

When I was earlier (around where you were) I could get a number. I can't now, but I also have an anterior placenta which makes it more difficult. We're happy just to hear the heartbeat though! That's great that you can find it so early.

  • I hardly ever look at the screen when I'm looking for my little guys' heartbeat. I just listen for that sweet little sound and call it good :) I don't think the heart rate it reads is ever really reliable.

  • Mine does that too. I just don't think it's as accurate as the Dr's since I get different readings and I can't always pinpoint where the baby is. I just take comfort in hearing it.

  • Did you try switching the mode it reads in? I don't usually get a reading on the third setting but I can see a number on the first and second, although I've never really been able to tell the difference between the two. Also, as PP suggested, try pushing down a little harder with the wand; when I have trouble getting a reading on the setting that works best (the first one for me), I push a bit harder and angle it around a little and it usually comes up.

It sounds like you may be in mode 3 which will not show a reading. Check to make sure you are in mode 1.  If it is in mode 1 you may want to try changing the batteries in case they are losing power.  The only other possibility I can think is if you could not get a steady enough reading for the doppler to register it.  I had that the other day - LO kept moving so I would pick up the hb and then lose it almost instantly.
