This will be my first CDed baby. I know when using sposies that I can look at it and/or squish it and tell when it is wet. For CDing, how do you know when to change? Check it often, stick your finger in? Change on schedule?
With a newborn we changed very frequently, usually every 1.5-2 hours, with 1 to 1.5 hours being the norm. We got into a habit of changing upon wakeup, after feeding, before naps, and whenever LO pooped (which was very often lol).
I feel the diaper -- pull open the cover and check if she is fussing and isn't hungry. We use prefolds and covers. I change a lot -- every 1.5 hours or less. Madelyn usually also tells me when she is wet...they can feel it more, so they will cry a bit or shift their body around, or at lest my baby does

I stick my finger in and check. If he's wet, I can tell right away (he's in prefolds and covers). Every 2 hours is normal for cloth diapers. Disposables have a gel that absorb the moisture that cloth doesn't have, so it doesn't take as long for the cloth diaper to be ready to be changed.
Now that he's older we don't follow a strict schedule. I'd say we change him every 2-3 hours. If I question if he needs a change I can tell by feel. When it's clean and dry, CDs are very soft and squishy. When they are wet they get hard and firm.
(That's what she said.)
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Ha!
But she is right, they change the way they feel too. As a NB, my LO pooped every 3.2 seconds so she was changed a lot. Now that she is older, every 3-4 hours is the norm during the day. She goes 12+ hours ON.

As a newborn DD would start screaming as soon as she had a wet diaper (and would proceed to scream through the entire diaper change). For the first 2 months we changed about every 2 hours and after every feeding at night.
At 6 months I change DD roughly the same frequency during the day, but she is in her ON diaper for 12 hours. Maybe once a week I go to change her and her diaper is still dry.
I change anything I know she pooped and also on this schedule. During the morning about every 2 hours as she pees more and in the evening every 3 hours. At night she goes 10-12 hours but currently doesn't pee or poop much at night. If she wakes up at night I always change.

We change every 2 hours unless I know she poops, then right away. I also check before/after naps.
With CDs we can't smell her poop though- which freaked us out a first but I think it's a plus!!
DH thinks I change her too much, but it doesn't increase our spending so I'm all for it!
