Reflux

My boys are 5 weeks old ! My little Zander has reflux pretty bad ... as a matter of fact we had a trip to the ER because he was choking so bad and I couldn't get him to stop (blows formula out of his nose, etc...) The pediatrician put him on similac for spit up hoping that since it is a little thicker it would help keep it down, well that didn't work and since then Carter started having some problems with reflux, not as bad as Zander ! We went back to the dr and he put both of them on Isomil ! Same issue, still losing alot of their formula, not as bad but it still happens ! They are still sleeping in their infant/toddler rockers and swing (ER doc said was a good idea for right now ) ! I'm curious what has worked for any of your babies !

 TIA

Re: Reflux

  • G had the same problems.  We were on Similac Sensitive with her until about 9 months old.  She was also taking Zantac, which helped a little.  I found that she slept best in her RnP.  It had just the right angle for her to help with keeping formula down.  I also liked the Fisher Price bouncer as it was more upright than some others on the market.  I hope your LOs grow out of it soon.

  • Both my twins had reflux.  DD's was silent.  She drink then burp, scream/cry, and not want to drink more.  DS was the spit up/vomit king.  They were on nutramigen formula and zantac and prevacid.  DD was off meds at 13.5 mo and DS was off at 15.5 mo.  Sucks, but the meds helped alot.

  • Our daughter Kendall had Reflux pretty bad as well and seemed like she was ALWAYS in pain the first few months. She also was spitting up TONS. We also made the switch to Isomil soy and that seemed to help a little w/ the pain but not the spitting up.  Really the only thing that got us by was keeping her upright for 30 minutes after each feeding...either angled in her Rock N Play or by me holding her against my chest.  As long as your LO is still gaining weight he should be fine.  You can also try angling the mattress of the crib. For Kendall she would only be comfortable sleeping on her tummy. Even though everyone say "back to sleep" she could not do it w/out choking on her spit up. I would let her nap all the time on her tummy (and keep a close eye) then at night she would sleep angled in her Rock and Play.  Once 3/4 months came along it got SOOO much better! Hang in there!

  • Both of my girls had reflux.  Medicine definitely helps take the acidity away, but it will likely take time for the spitting up to stop.  We switched to soy formula and that seemed to work better for their tummies.

My girls were rarely flat on their backs except for diaper changes.  We used danny slings in their cribs to allow them to sleep at an angle, and kept them upright after feedings for at least 30 minutes.  They spent a lot of time in bouncy seats.

  • Thanks ladies ! I will mention the meds to their Dr !
