Dentist appt at 37 weeks...

Perhaps a silly FTM question.

I have I general check up/teeth cleaning tomorrow and I'm concerned about being on my back for about 45 mins... I had an u/s last week, and even that, for 30 mins was very uncomfortable.

Do you think it'll be ok to go, based on how big/far along my LO is?

  • Express your concerns to your dental hygienist and she can not put the chair bck as far. We do this all the time for patients (usually very elderly) who can't go back far. It's still possible for her to clean your teeth in a somewhat reclined position

  • Maybe you can ask them to put the chair up every now and then if you feel you need a break?  I have a dentist appointment on Wednesday and was a little worried about this also, but I also know that if I'm uncomfortable I can talk to the hygienist and they are pretty great about helping.

This. They don't have to put you totally on your back.

I'm sure you'll be fine, but if you are really concerned, bring a small throw pillow that you can put under your right hip. If you elevate your right hip, you will sit a little crooked but that relieves any potential pressure that your uterus will put on whatever main vein/artery that is the reason they say to not lay on your back.

Good idea, also, DH was telling me that I'm surely not the first uber pregnant lady they've cleaned, so they're probably accustomed to making "us" feel comfortable...

I agree, bring a pillow. I would be extremely uncomfortable  but I've had back issues since wk 7. If you've had those issues too I would definitely bring a pillow!

  • I went a couple of weeks ago, and just told my hygienist that I needed to lay on my side. I was twisted on my hips, keeping my head how it normally is at the dentist (does that make any sense?). I would second the recommendation of bringing your own throw pillow to lean against. My hygienist seemed totally surprised that I wouldn't be able to be flat on my back, but it wasn't a problem at all. I also figured it's better to do this cleaning now, and that way the baby will already be in daycare when I have to go for my next check up.

  • I went just last week. They kept it short and sweet and asked me over and over if I was comftorable or needed anything. :

  • I've had cavities and a permanent crown put on during this pregnancy, and they always lay me back with my feet up a little more and it didn't bother me. After an hour my back started to ache a little, but it wasn't a big deal.
