3 MO scared of new places??

is this possible? I have a 3 mo, and she is fine at home, fine at grandma's, and fine in the car. anywhere else and she screams. At the top of her lungs, the entire time we are there, or until she falls asleep in exhaustion. seriously, we went for family pictures this evening, and she was fine all the way there, and started screaming when we got halfway down the sidewalk to the park. screamed an hour straight, and then was fine when we got back in the car. she does this at church, at restaurants, literally anywhere that is not one of the three above mentioned places.

This worries me, especially since we have to take a flight across the US next week. what can I do? my mom said to take her out a couple times a day to new places, but I also have a 6 mo FS, so that is why we stay home so much right now, because if we go out and she melts down as usual, and then he starts, i am all alone and outnumbered :(

long winded way to say: is this even possible? I guess I feel like to a 3 mo WE should be what is familiar, not places. As long as we are there, she should feel safe, I would think; is it even possible for her to realize we are somewhere she deems foreign? TIA, sorry this was a jumbled mess...

  • Is it possible she's over stimulated? The places you listed all tend to be bright, loud, and busy. That can be overwhelming for a little baby if they are generally sensitive. Are you wearing her when this happens or just carrying her? You sound like you have your hands full! Good luck!

  • she LIVES with a binky in her mouth, at all times; it's normally the only reason she is not crying. we adopted, and I tried to induce lactation, but never got anything, so I wasn't too worried about giving her the bink. I do wear her sometimes, which of course ticks her off more in her heightened state of freak out. normally if I can just go outside or somewhere people can't hear her, she will freak out and scream like a banshee for about ten minutes, but will eventually fall asleep after that if I have her in a wrap. some places though, that is just not an option. she hates to be in the wrap awake. I try to wear her around the house, to show her she doesn't HAVE to sleep in the wrap, we can just hang out, but she freaks out every time and acts like I am trying to put her down for a nap :(

  • What if you put a blanket over the car seat before you leave the car?? It does sound like over stimulation to me too. As far as wearing her while awake have you tried facing her out and using one arm to kind of souport her?? That's what I have to do for Lucas sometimes then after a bit he gets worn out and I face him in and he falls asleep.

  • I'm a bit of a lurker on this particular board...but this caught my eye because I work with foster/adopted children. Could there be something in her past (possibly medical) that is triggering this behavior? It's very common for some children to be easily over stimulated as well.

  • good point, I am not sure; we got her from birth at the hospital, but i know mom tried to hide the pregnancy and had no prenatal care until about 8 months...

It very well could be that she is simply a sensitive child and is easily over-stimulated. However, there is a chance that it could be medical. It may be wise to have her evaluated. Good Luck to you and your LO.
