BLW fail?

Hello! I am not sure where to ask this question and I felt the AP board was the most appropriate. We have just begun BLW. Last night we started with soft carrots and potatoes. She mushed it around a lot but got a tiny bit in her mouth. No big deal. I know this is a process that takes time. Tonight we gave DD advacado slices. She refused to put them in her mouth. In fact she threw a hugh fit after five minutes at the table. She puts everything in her mouth, including the dog. I am concerned that she will never get this or that we are doing it wrong. How can I encourage her to try things instead of shutting down? Maybe she just hates advacados? Ideas? Tips? Thanks in advance ladies.

  • BLW is a process that takes a lot of time before baby actually becomes successful at.  Have patience, and give her time.  Some things she will like, others she won't.  I don't think there is much you can do as far as encouragement to get her to try something, other than your enthusiasm.   As long as she is nursing enough, and before you offer solids, don't worry about how much she actually ingests.  Just enjoy, it's amazing watching them learn to eat!

  • Don't forget the BL part of BLW.  If she doesn't want it, no big deal.  Let her choose whether she wants it or not.  If she doesn't, no biggie.

    This.

At their age they should still be getting everything they need from BM (or formula if you are FF). Someone on this board, a long time ago, once told me "food is fun until one" when I asked how to get my son to eat and not throw the food on the ground. It's so true when it comes to BLW. At the point we just gave Nate his food and let him explore. Even at 19 months, some meals are better than others. But I do know that he is not a picky eater at all. He will try whatever you put in front of him.

Just let your little one have fun with this experience, and don't stress if meal time doesn't go as planned.

  • As per PPs, food before one is just for fun. Also you LO is still very young, 6 months is the recommended start age (we started DD about the same age as your DD so I'm not flaming you). Lots of kids won't eat anything until 7, 8 or even 9 months. Just make sure to keep trying, make sure you are eating at the same time as DD so she can get the idea of what to do. If she's ready to get down from the table then let her get down, it's BLW :)

  • My son doesn't like plain avocado. He likes it once it has been dipped in soup or with salt and lime. Needless to say he didn't start eating it till recently when I got less concerned about salt intake. But you could keep offering it with foods you have already tried that you know she likes.
  • Thank you ladies! I know all of this, I think I just needed some encouragement. You all did that beautifully. We will keep trying and I'll stop stressing.

  • How about broccoli? My DS could easily hold a big ol' broccoli stem and gnaw on the florets. However, we did start at 7 months. A lot of people that started at 6 months said it took a month to really get going. She may just be a bit young for now. Hold off and try introducing avocado a bit later.

ETA: It is NOT a fail! It is just a learning process for her :)  Oh, and here's some more encouragement... DS would immediately spit out any avocado for months. Now, he loves it.

  • Trust your baby! How old is she? My older son didn't start eating a wide variety of food until 15 months or so, and my younger was about 9 months when he really got the hang of it. If she's not interested, just try again later. It'll work out, I promise!

  • It's not a fail if you've only given it to her a few times.  And your DD is pretty young, not even 6 months old yet, so don't worry.  Keep introducing foods to her and eventually she'll figure it out.  My DD is 9 months and she doesn't even always want to eat, sometimes she's more interested in playing.  I don't stress about it, just let her decide what she wants and when.
