December 2010 Moms

My Dec '10 girl is a big sister!

Hey there! I know I'm hardly around anymore, but I just saw a little mention in last week's HDBD post and figured I'd announce our newest addition!

We welcomed Eliza Sage (nn Ellie) into the world on August 1st at 10:30pm!

It was an induction gone...weird.  I was induced w/ Pitocin at 40w5d, and my conditions were favorable at 3cm, -2 station, and 80% effacement. I got my epidural and it worked for a few hours but then it started to wear off. Turns out, that was because it fell out of my back!

We didn't know that it had come out because the big patch of tape was still in place. Everyone was telling me that I was just experiencing "breakthrough contractions" once my water was broken, and when I was trying to hit the button for more meds, I never felt like anything kicked in. The anesthesiologist came back twice to administer a full bolus and I was still in so much pain. In the meantime, I reached 10cm and was told to go ahead and push to just get it over with, since I was experiencing so much pain.

***ETA: Also wanted to mention that baby girl was sunny-side up while I was pushing the first round, and she was actually turning herself as I was pushing.  Because I was feeling everything at that point, I could feel her pushing/kicking against my abdomen as she was turning herself - it was the most insane thing in the world! My MW and the nurses were actually kind of laughing as they watched her because it was the most amazing thing to witness.***

So after about 2 hours of essentially an unmedicated labor (including 1.5 hrs of PAINFUL active pushing), we discovered that the epi had actually come out of my back because there was a huge puddle of liquid meds on my mattress! So, I got another epidural. Bliss returned!  I ended up having to labor down for about 3 hours because baby was still really high up, even after all that pushing.  But then it was go-time again and she was born after another 1 hr and 15 min of pushing.  Labor + delivery lasted 12.5 hours.

We had no idea what size baby girl would be because I hadn't had an ultrasound since 23 weeks. Because my belly never measured larger than 37 weeks and because DD1 was so incredibly tiny (at 4 lbs 11 oz and 17.5 inches), everyone guessed DD2 at 7 to 7.5 lbs.  Well, as I was pushing her out, my MW exclaimed what a large head she had and said she was changing her guess to 8.5 pounds.  Wouldn't you know it, my chubby little squish was born at 8 pounds 9 ounces and 21 inches!  I can't believe she was about twice the size of DD1!

So, here she is! Another Dec '10 Moms sibling:
