C-sections

Hospital bag question!

For all you second time c section mamas... What should I have in my hospital bag?? TIA!!

Re: Hospital bag question!

  • You'll want most of the things on the standard lists but you'll want more of some things. There are things like makeup, your own clothes, and underwear that some people didn't use and others couldn't live without. It's a personal preference.

A standard c-section stay is 4 nights instead of 2 so if you want your own clothes and toiletries bring enough. Make sure that the kind of pants and underwear you bring come up higher on your belly. Some Maternity things are too low.

Swelling in your feet and ankles happens after a c-section because of the fluids they give you. Make sure you pay attention to the shoes you will be wearing home. When I had DS1 I didn't know I would have a c-section. I wore sneakers to the hospital but they didn't fit when I left so I went home in slippers.

  • PP had good advice. The only thing different from standard lists is to make sure you have clothes that won't rub against your incision.

  • I brought a light robe, slippers, mini B&B works and shampoos ect, 2 nursing night gowns, and to wear home a maternity dress and flip flops. My boppy was great for BF the first few hrs after the c/s. I also brought Depends (strange yes, reccomended from a c/s blog) best choice ever no leaks or accidents, my bladder was a little weak after the cathider came out. Just throw them out and grab a new pair everytime your in the bathroom.
  • Yoga pants, nursing tank, your favorite body wash and shampoo, toothbrush, comb/brush, camera and extra batteries. I didn't really need a whole lot else since the hospital gave me all the underwear and pads I could hope for.

It wouldn't really be much different than any other birth-except I think the yoga pants are especially important since they won't irritate your incision.

  • Make sure you bring your own pillow from home to be more comfortable in the hospital bed.  Also, a small pillow helps.  You can hold it over your incision when you laugh when visitors come, when you get in and out of bed, and when you have to get in the car to go home.

The first shower you take after the procedure is truly the best shower you will ever take, so make sure you have all the toiletries you would want.

Comfy clothes for sure, and non-skid socks or slippers so that you can walk.  Make sure you get up and walk around as soon as you can...it helps the recovery!

    Good luck!

  • A couple things:

I wore the hospital gown for the surgery day and next day and then changed into my own clothes for day three and four.

Also, my hospital provided tons of pads and mesh panties (Which i LOVED) so I didn't need to pack any of those.

THe hospital had a little kitchen down the hall that provided juice/milk/coffee and snacks, so we took advantage of that when I needed a little snack. But my dad also brought us some peanut butter crackers and that was nice to have as well.

Things in my bag that I used:

Yoga pants and nursing tops (i just bought these at old navy and they've been great!)imagehttps://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=41578&vid=1&pid=174635&scid=174635042

Nursing bras (These were perfect: https://www.target.com/p/gilligan-o-malley-women-s-2pk-nursing-sleep-bra-bankers-gray/-/A-14065805#?lnk=sc_qi_detaillink)

    Boppy

    Makeup/Brush/Bath toiletries

Camera and Charger, as well as phone charger

    no-skid socks

    Cardigan

    Robe

Your own towel. THe hospital ones are tiny and hard. One for DH too.

Going home dress and flip flops

My dad also bought a twin memory foam mattress topper for DH to put on his bed and he said it was much better than just sleeping on the bed.

The only thing I packed for baby was a going home outfit and a blanket. He wore the hospital shirt and hat for the entire time we were there.

Side note: I would make sure you request an abdominal binder. I LOVED mine. It really helped support my incision.
