STMs: Glider vs. Recliner Chair?

So I wanted to buy a glider, but we just moved into a great apartment however I don't have room for both of my recliners to fit in the living room. DH suggested putting one in the nursery and using that instead of purchasing a glider. My recliner also rocks so it makes sense. I love my recliner but I have heard many wonderful things about gliders.

So, my question for you mommies is whether it will make a big difference or not.  Anyone not have a glider and you were able to get comfortable for those late night feedings or fussy baby nights?

Re: STMs: Glider vs. Recliner Chair?

  • We went with a nice rocking recliner for DDs nursery vs. a glider and I couldn't have been happier! Being able to recline back and sleep on those nights when she was sick/fussy/needing mommy was amazing! I love the look of gliders in the nursery but the recliner was so much more practical! It is also wide enough that she can sit next to me in it while reading (which will come in handy while I'm nursing this new LO).

  • We have a glider we love, but your recliner sounds awesome. And you get to save $! The only thing I'd add is to get a nursing stool. Nice to brace your feet against something while you're leaning back and rocking or falling asleep (I can't count how many times I fell asleep feeding DS).

  • We bought a recliner when DD was born, and it's been used so much! My husband tried both the glider and the recliner, and given his height (6'7") the recliner was just a lot more comfortable for him. It's also been super comfy for me.

  • I'd rather have the rocker recliner any day. Gliders are not very comfy, imo, the cheaper ones start to clack and sway with use so you have to invest in the expensive ones if you're going to get one anyway, you have to use the separate ottoman to put your feet up and it always starts to move away from you.... a fully upholster rocker recliner would be the optimal choice, for me.

  • We have a glider, but I don't see any reason why a recliner wouldn't be just as good if not better at serving the same purpose.  I'd plan on using the recliner and if for some odd reason that doesn't work out for you then purchase a glider if you want one.

The only concern I would possibly have is space related.  Obviously a recliner might take up more space than your typical glider, but if that's not an issue for you then I wouldn't worry about it!

  • I have never sat in your recliner, so I cannot vouch for how suitable I would think it is as a STM, but I can say that I love my glider and still use it every day for my toddler. We are buying a second to put in LO's room.

  • I am all about reusing and not having to buy what I already own, so I would NOT buy a glider for baby's room.

  • Try the recliner first. We used an IKEA chair that had a bit of rock to it. LO wasn't a hold-and-rock baby, so it didn't really matter what I nursed her in, so long as it was comfortable for me.

  • I got a La-Z-Boy for the nursery and I have absolutely no regrets.  So comfy!  I slept in it quite a few nights and it was perfect for that and rocking the baby.
  • We had a similar issue. I put the recliner in our bedroom and the glider in the nursery. I used the glider alot for nursing and recliner alot for sleeping LOL.

  • We bought a glider and I hated it. We used a rocking recliner as well.

  • Rocking recliner all the way. I hate my glider now.  It is NOT confortable to sleep in overnight with a baby that can't lay down because of an ear infection. I would often just give up and go to the living room instead and hop on the recliner. I want a recliner upstairs soooo bad! I was so sure, as a FTM, that I just had to have the glider instead of the recliner. How foolish I was!

  • We bought a recliner instead. It seems so much practical to me. We will have it for a time. Gliders scream "nursery" to me.

  • I hated my rocker/ glider... they arent very wide at all. Im planning on getting a papasan chair!!! super comfy, spacious amd the can be used for more than one purpose. my sons glider just sat in the room taking up space ad we no longer sat in it.  I wouldnt want in in my living room  either. A recliner would be great in a room or a living room.

  • I vote for the glider. We also had a recliner and I wasn't able to nurse in it because it was just too squishy, if that makes any sense. It made my lower back hurt and I sank into it. I couldn't keep a good posture while nursing, feeding and rocking.

However, it was great for sleeping with babe. LOL.

  • We have the best of both worlds, a gliding recliner from the Best Storytime series.  Having had both features at my disposal for a couple years now, I would hands down chose a recliner (particularly if it rocks) over a glider.  Sure gliders are comfy.  But being able to catch some sleep in the chair comfortably has significantly outweighed the gliding feature!

  • I think your recliner will be just fine. I used a traditional rocking chair and will do it again, but honestly, spent most of my time either in my bed, on the bed in my son's room, or on the couch. I survived without a glider and have no plan of getting one this time. A recliner is fine.

  • I did all of my feedings (breastfeeding) right in the bed.  I'd just sit against pillows and use the Boppy.  We had a stationary chair in our bedroom which was my #2.  Third, I had a glider in the nursery which was never used until he was 7 months and sleeping in his crib.  I'd prefer a glider over a recliner.

  • Thanks so much ladies! I think I will go with DH's idea unless a problem arises! Thanks for all the advice!

  • I don't really see much difference between the two, just whichever fits your budget and your body. We have a rocker that my mom had reupholstered for us. The sides are wood so I always need to tuck a blanket or pillow on the sides when I wanted to pull my legs up to get comfy. Also, I never had a foot stool for it, then a few months ago I found something to use as a foot stool and I'm so much more comfortable. So I'd definitely have something like that around for when you don't have the footrest up (I assume it doesn't rock with the foot rest up). I think the recliner sounds great, especially since you already have it!

  • The only benefit I see with having a glider instead of a rocking recliner is if space is limited and the recliner doesn't fit. We have a rocking recliner in the living room and bought a glider for DD's room when she was born. I seriously only used it maybe five times. The recliner was so much better for so many reasons! We sold the glider and don't plan on getting a new one.
