S/O Name confusion... How about your name?

My name is Jessica. I constantly get called Jennifer and even Stephanie, if you believe that. Stephanie sounds like Jessica? Really??

My last name now, when pronounced INCORRECTLY, sounds like a delicious ice cream treat. It drives me completely crazy! It was so much easier with my one syllable, no way to mispronounce maiden name. Sigh.

How about you?

  • My name is always mispronounced. It is pronounced just like "Kevin" with a D, but instead everyone says "de-vawn". They also think I am a guy. I love my name though, so it's all good.

  • I get Tatiana ALL.THE.TIME....2 seconds after I introduce myself, I get Tatiana.  In all fairness, I am bad with names and flat out forget most of them 2 seconds after I hear them, but unless I am positive, I dont just spout a name I didnt even hear.

DH's name is Eamon (aim-en)..He has to give his ID all the time to enter buildings for his job.  They almost always just skip his first name and write is middle name - Robert - on his visitor pass.

ETA: DS is named Dylan and several times now I have gotten DYE-LIN....ummm, really?

  • My name is Cara (Care-uh) and I constantly get call Car-uh. It drives me crazy! I've been with my DH for 4 years, married for 2 and his grandma still calls me Car-uh. It's ridiculous. And his family thinks it's funny that she can't pronounce it.

Ok, this made me seriously LOL. But I have several friends named Devon and would never think to mispronounce it. Also, how about Devon Odessa and Devon Gummersall from My So-Called Life??

  • All the freakin time, and it's aggravating. Amanda is what I get called most of the time, which I find strange because Ashley is pretty common. WTH? Oh, and my last name? It's messed up even more. It's really simple to pronounce, but I swear, it's rare to hear it pronounced correctly.

  • My name is always spelled wrong.  People always spell it "Chelsea."  Also, when I meet people and say my name they're always like, "Oh like Chelsea Clinton?"  Every.time.

Tatiana reminds me of a little Russian figure skater. Plus, you get the nickname Tati, which is fun and just a little risque sounding.

  • I'm also Jessica and I get Jennifer a lot. DHs name is Shenandoah, which he often shortens to Shen. "Shenandoah" often just gets a quizzical look, but "Shen" gets transformed into Shawn, Shannon, Chen, etc etc. It almost defeats the purpose of having a shortened form.

  • My full first name is Elizabeth but I go by Beth.  You wouldn't believe how many times people call me Liz when they see Elizabeth.  I would NEVER think to shorten someones name, especially when there are different options out there (Liz, Beth, Betty)

When I was at the bank one of the tellers had called me Liz a few times and then asked if there was anything else he could do for me today.  I said, "Yes, please look at your screen and tell me what it says on there that is making you call me Liz."  He stammered and explained to me that Liz is a shortform of Elizabeth.  Lol, I know that. I told him I don't go by Liz and that it was inappropriate for him to shorten my name at all in a professional setting (let alone not knowing which shortform I actually go by) and would he call someone whose name is listed as Richard, ***?  He said no and I made my point.

As for my last name, my maiden name was mispronounced ALL THE TIME.  I mean, it's not common but if you know how to read, you should be able to pronounce it.  My married name is commonly mispronounced.  People just add a random 'r'.  My last name as 'sping' in it and people will say 'spring'.

  • I get called Pat all the time... So I say Cat, like the animal. Some people still don't get it though...

  • i'm greta and i get gretchen a lot.  some ppl think gretel & ask if i have a brother hansel.  and then i get the ppl that think greta is short for something (usually gretchen)  but i love my name &  only know a few other gretas.

my maiden name is hard to pronounce & is very ethnic norwegian.  my college roommates thought i was an exchange student when they got the roommate assignment letter!

  • My name is Erica, 95% of the time when I introduce myself I get "Erin?"...no not Erin, or Lauren which I get too, ERICA. And without a "K"

  • I've never had to much trouble with my first name - Jamie. Sometimes for spelling though, I will have people add an extra i - Jaimie.

Dh though has a very French name. His first name is Pier-Luc after a local Quebec hero. He often goes just by Pier. If someone sees it spelt they will mispronounce it as a boat pier but for some reason he just has to add the Luc and people understand it's pronounced Pierre. His last name is very French as well and we hear the most creative names when people try to pronounce it!

  • I've gone by Kate by entire life which is simple, but my full name is Kathleen. If people just see my full name I get a lot of Kathy and Katie, which I can't stand. My m used to get really pissy when people would call me Kathy. I'd always tell my mom she probably should have just named me Kate to avoid the confusion...oh well.

  • My married last name is also a commonly used first name so sometimes people call me by my last name by accident. I have gotten used to it and just answer to it. My maiden name was very uncommon and no one could pronounce it properly let alone spell it the right way.

  • My name is always mispelled and always mispronounced. Granted, the spelling of my name is not the traditional way to spell it there are other's who do spell it my way. It was SO annoying growing up.

That's why I am so adamant about spelling a baby name the traditional way. Going from my own experience, it is SUCH A PITA.

The typical way of spelling my name is ELISE... but my parents spelled it ILYSE to honor my grandmother whose name was Irene.

  • My name is Kristen. I often get Christine, Chris, Kirsten, Krista, Kristy. I go by Kristen... No nickname. A few people call me Kris and I hate it but I feel bad correcting it at this point.

And everyone wants to spell it with "Ch" at the beginning...

  • My name is Julianne. Teachers would call me Julian a lot. Um no, that is a boys name. I am clearly a female.

My maiden name is a common word so it was super easy to pronounce. My married name however is very German and no one ever gets it right. I always have to spell it before I say it.

  • My name is Mahala. Ma-ha-la. I've gotten Ma-hay-la, Ma-ha-lyea, Me-hayle-ya, and once Paula. My 8th grade English teacher said it wrong the entire school year, after the first month I stopped correcting her. Nowadays people usually get it right. I think it's because society has become more international and unique names are easier for people now. Most people assume it's Hawaiian and I get a lot of questions about it. I try not to be offended but it gets tiring (my name is Hebrew). In high school a friend daubed me Mala. I was introduced to DH this way as well as my BFF. They introduced me to their families as Mala which lead to a lot of confusion later. My maiden name is Russian. If you didn't know better though you'd think it was middle eastern. This actually lead to the only raciest comment I've personally heard and the reason I rarely eat at a certain fast food chain that has been in the news a lot recently. Now, i could understand how you could assume I was middle eastern from just my name, but this guy referenced a specific subset of Islamic culture in a not not very nice way. (I in no way look middle eastern at all)

  • My name is Amber. It was a very popular 80's name but I get Amanda a lot and Ashely some. At my old job I was on the phone nonstop and people would say Deborah and Ambrin. My maiden name was German and almost always said wrong, I didn't correct people most of the time.

  • My name is common, Lindsey, but people want to call me Leslie or Lucy. It also gets spelled wrong a lot and only because they're so many alternative spellings. My maiden last name is a very common word, but it isn't usually a last name. So I use to get wierd looks. My DH name is always misspelled or mispronounced, his name is Jerame pronounced Jeremy. Why his parents spelled it that way is beyond me. But DH last name is very common and easily spelled, so that's nice.

*LOL* Another Devon here, I could've written the above post!  I think the mispelling of my name is way more comical than the mispronunciation.  I've had Devin, Deven, Devyn... Everything BUT what it should be... I just roll with it and giggle to myself.

  • My name is Erin, and it gets misspelled/mistaken as the boys spelling. I do get called Karen of once in a while.

  • Mine is Courtney, and people always want to call me Brittany or Whitney. Where I'm from it isn't common, and the other two names are much more common, but it's still annoying.

Oh, and a distant relative thinks my name is Courtley. Sigh.

  • My name is Katrina and I frequently get called Kristina,  both by people who read my name and those who hear it. There was a gentleman at the church I used to attend who called me Kristina for 2 years, even though people called me Katrina in his presence. People hear what they want to hear.

  • I am Alex, short for Alexandria, but I usually hear Alice or Alexis. Most people leave the i out of Alexandria, and I've been called Alexander more than I can count. I've also been called Lexi, Sandy, Andrea, and Allie. I'll never understand why people don't listen when you say your name.

  • Yes! My name is Nikki and I get called Nicole ALL the time... Ugh, that's not my name!

  • People ask me all the time if my name is my full name.  Yes.  I'm Kristy. Not Kristen, Kristine, or any other derivative.  I despise being called Krissy or Kris.  And there's about 10 different ways to spell Kristy so I have to always correct people.

My maiden name isn't super hard, but very uncommon so I have to spell it or people will get it wrong.  My married name is Italian so once I say that it helps.  It ends in "ucci" and is pronounced like Hoochie, but some people will say it like Yucky.

  • My name is Laura and I get Lauren and Laurie on the regular. It drives me bonkers! Also when they can get it right that it is Laura I then have to deal with some people pronouncing it LARA vs LOR-A. Not as bad, but I hate that just as much as Lauren or Laurie.

I wish I could tell you all the teasing from my married last name. But I guess I should keep that private. Poor DH growing up got annoying jokes about it daily.

  • My name is Julia and I constantly get called Julie. When I tell them my name is Julia they usually say "Oh well isn't Julie your nickname". It's always irked me Julie is a different name entirely....

  • All the time. My name is Erin and I get Ann the majority of the time. Honestly, if I don't think I'll see the person again I just go along with Ann. It used to bug me a lot when I worked at a grocery store and wore a name tag. Our name tags had our names in one inch letters on them. Read people.

  • My name is Jenicka, pronounced JEH-nick-uh and I seriously got "Shaniqua" once at school. The teacher called, "Shaniqua? Shaniqua (my last name)?" I raised my hand like the scrawny white girl I am and my teacher was like, "it's not Shaniqua is it." Uh, no.
