Pumpers: 4 week business trip?

I have the opportunity to apply for a four week (out of state) training program. Now, there's obviously a chance I won't get it, but if I do, it would mean missing a month sometime around 10 or 11 months. I would be housed in an apartment with a full freezer, so getting the milk home would just be an investment in a cooler and dry ice, but do you think I'll be sentencing myself to a life of pumping, with DS not taking the boob for a month?

Re: Pumpers: 4 week business trip?

  • i wouldn't even worry about this yet. apply and get it and see what happens later.

by 10-11 months, you child may have self-weaned already - you can't predict it.

    good luck!

  • I'd be more worried about my supply tanking than DS refusing the boob.   But like the pp said, you won't really know how things will be going at 10/11 months, so if you really want the training, you just have to decide if you're ok with giving up BF if being away and pumping doesn't work out for you.
  • I would be worried about my supply dropping.  . .But, is there a chance you could take your ds with you and a family member or friend watch him during the day?

  • I agree with pps don't worry about the logistics yet. You may decide by then not to keep bfing, you may be barely pumping, some drs let you start cow's milk at 11 months so if you decide that you maybe able to do that. I would worry about it when you accepted and it gets closer and you see your bfing routine.

  • Not to discourage you from pumping for a month, but I was gone for 6 days when DD was 6 months old, and when I came back my supply dropped from about 110% to 80% (I was freezing extra milk before the trip every day)... and then it dropped off fast after that - DD BF only for 8 months. So if BF is super important to you, just take that into consideration.

PS I have the PIS Medela pump so it wasn't due to a bad pump....
