door handles

Can your LO open your doors?  What kind of door knobs do you have.  We have the lever type that you pull down or push up on.  Isaac can open them already.  I know it took a long time before the kids could open regular door knobs.

Re: door handles

  • We have the regular turn kind and Nate can reach them, but can't open them.  He hasn't figured out lids on things yet either (a blessing!)  My MIL has the lever type on her front door though and he figured it out awhile ago.  They have little kid proof latches on the tops of all their outside doors though so it's no biggie.

  • We have the regular round ones, and he tires to turn them like he knows what he's doing, but I think his hands aren't strong/big enough to actually turn them.  MIL has the lever type and he can open them no problem.

  • Same here.  Aiden will turn the handles of doors, and is very close to getting it, but not quite.

The new house we are moving to next month has the lever style handles, and he can get those open.  I'm going to have to get something to child proof that!

My inlaws have these.  They work really well and still keep the 9 and 10 year old in the house!  :)  They go at the very top of the door, so they can't reach them.

my MIL has this one for the basemet door.  It's simple to use, but somewhat of an eyesore...   https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2792265

Same here.  G turns them back and forth, but not quite far enough.  Our house has the original glass knob handles from the 1940s, and they are tough to turn and they stick.  If we had new knobs, she'd probably have them open.  Soon there will be no more hiding in the bathroom when I need to do my "business"!

  • A can do doors with lever handles (we don't have any in our house) but regular turn knobs he can turn just hasn't figured out to pull or push when turning so we are ok for now. He has figured out our baby gate though....so much for childproof.

  • My ILs have the lever type & DS has been opening them from about 2 months or so ago.

At home, we have some doors with regular turn knobs that he can't turn, but then since upstairs is finished attic (cape cod), the doors are smaller so the knobs are lower. He just started opening them like 2 weeks ago. Once he's in his toddler bed, we'll have to address that.

The door leading to our basement has the childproof knob cover on it. We put that up as soon as he started walking.

And he just figured out how to hang on the fridge door & open it, so we're going to have to put the fridge lock on now!

  • We have regular door handles and she has no idea how to open them. We do still have a safety knob on the basement door though. My MILs new house has the lever types, and she does not understand that DD can open those doors. They have not moved in yet, but i am going to have to take DD there and show MIL. She thinks closing the doors will keep her contained.

  • We have the same kind as you- they have been able to open them for months.  I have pressure mounted gates in doorways to the master and their room- then locks that go on the door in the craftroom, hall bath, guestroom, and hall closet.  This has kept them out of rooms that they do not need to be in.
  • We have levers and C learned a loooong time ago to open then.  I've been locking the bathroom door for months now if I want privacy (when DH is home to watch C of course!).

  • Well I guess my son is a toot, he can open all doors and even get in our child proofed bathroom cabinets No, just a thought though, we have this childproof lock on our garage door and as of yesterday N can open it, so today we are installing a lock on the top of the garage door so he cant escape.
