Born August 5th at 10:41am, 7lbs 5oz, 19.5 inches long
Here is the first picture my husband took:

And this is her after we left recovery and I'd had a nap:

So, long story. Some of it I'd already shared, so feel free to skim the first part!
My last prenatal appointment was last Thursday. I was checked, and the doctor scheduled me to be induced that Saturday. It wasn't what I wanted, I was exactly 40 weeks and there was no medical reason for inducement. When I asked if we could prolong this and go in at a later date, I was told no. However I was told that I could explain at the hospital that I wanted a med-free birth and they could break my water first and go from there. I went along with it, because I honestly felt that labor would come after my water broke. I really thought I was close.
So Saturday comes, and off we go to the hospital. My room was all set up with an IV full of Pitocin and an RN to hook me up. I explained my deal, she talked it over with the delivery doctor, and they had no problem just breaking my water and seeing how it went. Good deal.
The doctor finally came by and checked to see how far dilated I was. His first words were "hmm...get the ultrasound." And we all saw on the screen that baby was breech. I was shocked. Shouldn't my other doctor have known this? We knew she was breech at 32 weeks, and I had requested (it wasn't offered) to be checked at every single appointment thereafter and I was told each time she was head down. I'm not a doctor, but seriously wtf, this should have been known. What if I had taken the Pitocin first thing that morning?
Yeah I'm still really bitter about this. Really really bitter. I wanted so badly to experience labor, and now I may never be able to.
Anyway, I was scheduled for a c-section the next morning. I was really afraid. Amongst all other worries that go with a major abdominal operation, I am irrationally afraid of an epidural and a catheter. I don't know why, really. For some reason, the nurse decided to put in my catheter before the epidural. It hurt. It realllly hurt, and she couldn't do it. In the middle of her trying and me tearing up from the pain, the anestegeologist comes in and annouces it's epidual time!
At this point I freak out. I start shaking badly and crying and just hugging my husband. But everyone was really really nice and helped me get though it - I owe a lot to that part of the hospital staff because I was a complete wreck, and they took it in stride.
After the epidual, which sucked, I calmed down, in part because it lowers your heart rate, and it was nice not to feel the pain from the botched catheter attempt. The catheter was put in after I was numb, and I didn't feel a thing.
The surgery went well, everyone who has looked at my incision has remarked upon how great it's healing
The one strange this is after she was delivered and my husband went off to watch over her, I notice the anesthesiologist doing something with my IV. I asked what it was, and he said he was giving me something to relaz. Holy crap, I guess so! I can't remember what it was, but I went on a kinda trip. I kept dozing in and out while being stiched up and dreaming the nuttiest things...
My biggest fear through all this was that I'd miss out on skin-to-skin and breastfeeding. Not the case at all...they brought her to me in recovery and we spent a good hour just snuggling, and she latched on for the first time perfectly.
My stay in the hospital was nice. All the staff seemed aware of what had happened, and were so kind to me. I really want to do something for them, but I'm not sure what.
We came home Wednesday, and things have been relatively smooth since. I've had a couple of stress-outs with feedings, but I think I have the hang of everything now. Her poop is an awesome color and she's almost back at her birth weight.
I couldn't be happier ![]()

I had almost the same birth experience! Although my lady did have an u/s at 36 wks to make sure she was head down bc she had been breech around 34wks. Everything looked great and then the dr. Confirmed at .37 and 38 wk appt. that she was head down. She flipped sometime between thurs. and tues. when my water broke. I found out when we went in to confirm that my water broke and they discovered she was breech. I had to wait until am for the surgery bc we had eaten dinner. Then my water gushed at 4 am and labor started to get really intense. I was so annoyed that I had to go through a few hours of labor knowing I was getting a csection. Oh and I totally feel you on the catheter before the epidural (add to that really intense contractions) and I was pretty much in hell!
Congrats on baby Evelyn though. That was our team green girl name last time! This time we got our girl and named her Isla.
she's beautiful and i love the name you chose for her.
i'm also sorry that that birth didn't go as you had hoped, but i am really happy that it sounds like you got great care while in the hospital. i'm sure that makes a big difference.
all the best to you and your new and improved family
