Loft bed?

Just wondering if anyone has their LO in a loft bed (or is considering a loft bed).  DDs share a room, DD1 refuses to move out, but it's not a really huge room.  I'm thinking that because of the way the room is set up (closet and attic door), we won't even be able to fit 2 twin size beds.  DD1 is curently in a toddler bed but needs to move out of it.  She is requesting the reversible bed from IKEA but wants it as a loft bed.  We've seen it several times and it's not as high as a regular bunkbed plus we would get the canopy that goes over it.  She slept on the top bunk of a bunk bed last year and last week for vacation and did fine both times.  Opinions?

Re: Loft bed?

  • We've had DS #1 in a junior loft (which would be about the same size as the IKEA) since he was a bit short of 3 and it's fabulous.  I think it's a great alternative to bunk beds and you can either fit a toddler bed, of one of the IKEA beds that larger than a toddler but shorter than a twin right underneath of it.  Once you needed #2 in a twin you could always do one at a right angle underneath the loft portion.

  • DS is in a junior height loft bed.  It comes up to around my chest level, and I think that's about the same height as the bed you're considering?

I love it, he loves it.  Since he has his room to himself, we put his dresser under there, and the rest of the space is his "fort", which he stocks with pillows, blankets, and his stuffed animals.  Most nights he actually prefers sleeping under the bed!  LOL  He did fall out one time.  I don't know how he did it, since there is a rail the whole way around, but he's all over the place when he sleeps.  I keep pillows on the floor near the bed, and that's what he fell onto.  He wasn't hurt in the least and barely even woke up.  I would be a little nervous if the bedroom floor was hard, but his is carpeted.  Plus *most* kids don't fall out, from what I hear.  :)

  • We have the Ikea one and it is great. The only down side is DS is 5 and still rolls out of the bottom bed since it is so low to the ground he does not wake up and is not learning to stay in bed.

  • We had looked at the IKEA bed but since there is no IKEA near us, we didn't want to pay the shipping. DH found the knockoff plans online and built this for DD this summer (and it only took him 24 hours to do). She LOVES it. And, DH was able to alter the plans as necessary to fit our needs (higher sides to accommodate a thicker mattress, more rungs on the ladder, etc.). The whole thing cost about $150. We did buy the canopy from IKEA since we were able to put that in our suitcase when we were visiting my mom in Florida.

Here are the plans in case you are interested in going the DIY route:

  • We have loft style bunk beds in DD1's room. She was 4 years old when we got them, and she's been fine sleeping on the top. We had to get a thinner mattress so that there was enough of a railing, but we haven't had any issues.

We ended up finding our bed on craigslist for around $400. It's a nice solid wood bed. The comparable ones we found in stores were $2k+. Cheaper versions were $800.

This is really similar to what we have. The extra drawers and shelving on the bed are really nice.
