clomid while breastfeeding?

Hi ladies,

I have one daughter five months old and I EBF.  I have PCOS and high FSH levels.  OB suggested that if we want a sibling for DD that we should try to get pregnant sooner rather than later... so we will likely be starting TTC in the next few months.  Last time we did clomid plus IUI and did HCG shots in the second half of my cycle. I had hoped to BF daughter for the first year so I am wondering is it safe to take clomid while nursing?  Can I pump and dump during the days that I take the clomid but still continue to BF otherwise?  I have built up a decent supply of milk but will go through it quickly if I have to wean DD and stop nursing altogether. Anyone have experience with this?  Thanks!

Re: clomid while breastfeeding?

  • 1) OMG that tartan dress is adorable!

    2) My RE wouldn't let me do any meds until I had weaned.  It sucked because DS2 was happy to continue our nursing relationship, but I weaned him at 15 mo.

Could you have your dr. clarify if you really need to do it now or if you can hold off another 6 mo?  Seems like PCOS and high FSH isn't a completely desperate situation that you need to drop everything to cycle right this instant, but yeah, don't wait another 2 yrs, kwim?

If he truly thinks it is an urgent situation I'd wean because I'd rather give my baby a sibling rather than 6 mo months more of a nursing relationship. But nursing isn't easy in the beginning so I'd be reluctant to quit it prematurely.

  • I am taking femara but my RE would not prescribe any meds until I weaned like PP.  I weaned DD at 6 months, I had about 2 months frozen.  I am upset that I did this.  I do not think a few more months of breasfeeding would have changed anything.  Sometimes I think, "what is I never get pregnant again" and I weaned DD for no reason and I may never get to experience breastfeeding again.  I regret weaning too early.

  • I'm really glad you asked this.  I haven't found much in my own research and I've been scared to talk to the RE about it.  We haven't started any testing yet-- so we have a little more time before we make any decisions on meds.

Through kellymom.com, I have found this... In a nutshell, it appears that it's not known what effects clomid has on nursing infants.  But clomid appears to diminish or suppress lactation in nursing mothers. I have found some info-- not sure how reliable-- that is an L3 on the lactation risk scale-meaning it is "moderately safe."

Although I am ready to wean, my son shows no interest in stopping.  I honestly don't know how to stop.  I don't even know if am producing-- he switches sides like crazy.  I'm not worried about losing my production at this point. And I will tell you that I am scared to pieces to talk to the RE about it.

If you find out more info, please share it....

  • I would suggest continuing to bf until the 1 year mark.  You don't want to stop and then regret it if you don't get pregnant right away.  I definitely wouldn't risk taking meds while breastfeeding.

All of the above!  You should BF until you are both ready to stop.  I thought I wouldn't regret it, but I do.  And even as I was weaning him, I knew I would miss it.   I was anxious to start trying and I am never going through all this again.  If we get lucky enough to have #2 I am not doing IF treatments again and nursing till my baby is 1!

Also, my OB said no clomid while nursing.  Its not worth chancing it and plus we try to do organic when we can, so I wouldn't use any meds while BFing.

  • I did not wean to cycle again - my RE is not a breastfeeding expert.  Dr. Hale at infantrisk.org has several threads on the necessity (or not) of weaning while going through fertility treatments.  Ultimately you have to do what you feel is safest and works best for your family, but in my situation the opinion of my RE did not figure into it.  He admitted that his "risk" was theoretical and the the biggest concern would be lactation suppressing ovulation further and/or nursing inhibiting implantation.  I conceived fraternal triplets....
